Despicable Roommate

Silence

We were all silent during the ride. Alec didn’t say anything and I didn’t feel like it either. I was thinking of getting a new room somewhere because everything sucked at the time. The only way was to get a job because my parents had already paid four months’ rent and I couldn’t just ask for more money to get another room. Anyway, if I explained my situation, there was a possibility that they would understand and get me some money but then again, I didn’t want to bother them.

They didn’t have to know that I’d messed up my life. If they got wind of it, they would start giving me endless lectures which did not sound better than my current situation. In other words, everything sucked and there was little I could do about it.

I was trying to decide what type of job to apply for. The problem was that this would take a lot of time and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to bear with Alec till then. That, I was yet to figure out. Why did very attractive boys have to be jerks? Why do they always feel like they’re on top of the world?

We had reached the University main gate but instead of going in, Alec continued to drive along the highway.

“Where are we going?” I asked in confusion.

“We’re going for breakfast,” He said without looking at me.

“Just drop me here”, I said, “I’m not going to have breakfast when I’m already very late. I doubt I will enjoy it.”

“I’ll not let you go to class with an empty stomach.”

“Why do you care?” I asked, irritated by his insistence.

“I don’t care about you,” He pointed out. “I just don’t want you to faint because of me.”

“Whatever,” I turned to look out of the window trying to forget about being late.

We reached a restaurant and ordered what we wanted. After our meal, he dropped me off at my faculty and I met Kari heading to class. Realizing I wasn’t the only one who was late was cool.

“Hey babe,” She hugged me. “That was the sweetest thing ever.”

“What?” I smiled, though I didn’t want to.

“Alec brought you to school,” She nudged me with a bright smile on her face. “Seems you guys are getting along well.”

“Not at all. He’s still as bad and irresponsible as ever.”

The professor was already in class when we reached. It was one of my favorite classes so I enjoyed it.

When it was done, I turned to talk to my neighbor, Millie whom I hadn’t talked to for a very long time yet she was my friend.

“Seems you forgot about some of us one of these days,” She commented as she placed her notebook in a small handbag.

“I’ve just been having a lot of trouble lately,” I said standing up so we could move out of the room together.

“Sorry,” She said. “So where are you heading to?”

“To my room and you?” I inquired. Kari had a group discussion to attend so I was leaving her behind.

“Not really sure,” She said. “But we could go to your room for a few hours. I don’t have anything to do in mine.”

Whoa! She just invited herself. I was about to say yes then it hit me. My room was a mess and was probably reeking of alcohol. What would Millie think of me if she saw that? I had always had an image of a responsible person.

I scanned my brain for an excuse.

“Okay,” I said. “Lem’me text my roommate to see if he’s in because I don’t have my key with me.”

So lame, I know. But it worked.

“What if he isn’t there? I can’t wait for his reply because he might delay.”

“Oh no,” I pretended to plead. “He is gonna text back immediately, please wait.”

I hoped she wouldn’t and was relieved when she didn’t. She spotted a nice guy in our class and called out to him.

“Bye,” She told me and flew towards the cute guy friend of hers.

That went well.

I heaved a sigh of relief and went my way. I was so worried about my room and how I was going to clean both the living room and the kitchen alone.

That silly mammal could be busy flirting with girls. I wondered how he even managed to get to University without brains.

His looks did almost everything for him and he knew it thus becoming so arrogant. He was a person you didn’t want at one time, but the next minute you wanted him. Or maybe I was just young, naïve and confused.

I have to admit that I was really flattered when he let me in his car. He even bought me breakfast which was so sweet of him. But why did he act like that? Well, maybe he also had feelings but I highly doubted that. He couldn’t use people’s daughters if he had.

I took a taxi to my apartment because I couldn’t waste energy walking as I had a lot of work to do in my room.

I climbed the steps at a very slow pace because I had no desire to reach my room. Everything was disgusting and to make it worse, I was very hungry.

I froze when I opened the door.

The living room was spotless. It looked like no one had ever been there. It looked like those very cool rooms I see in movies and adverts. I had never made any room as tidy as that in my whole life. The floor was perfectly clean and the couch looked as good as new. The table, television etcetera had all been dusted and wiped.

I dropped my bag to the floor near my bedroom door and continued to the kitchen which was also very tidy and clean. I didn’t think I belonged there.

Alec was cooking. What? I didn’t expect anything like this. This is from NôvelDrama.Org.

“Hey,” I said quietly.

“Welcome back, Lynn.” He smiled. Alec smiled genuinely at me! Unbelievable!

“Thanks, I guess.”

“No problem,” He said. “Get ready for lunch, roomie.”

“Uhmm…”

“I made lunch for both of us, Lynn.”

What was going on?
