Alpha Kilian frowned upon hearing this and grumbled, “Is that how you perceive me, Grandfather?”

“Wouldn’t my perception be justified, considering the foolish behavior you have displayed?” Alpha King Larry retorted firmly, refusing to give an inch.

“I resorted to such behavior initially to express my displeasure at being coerced into this marriage. How could you insist on an arranged union in this day and age? It is unjust to force the two of us into a loveless marriage. You also bear responsibility in this mess!” Alpha Kilian argued, but added, “The circumstances have changed now. When I fall in love with a woman, it will be a love that lasts!”

Alpha King Larry let out a mocking laugh and uttered, “Do you think I have nothing better to do? Had you not pleaded with me when you were young, insisting on marrying Nelly, do you believe I would have agreed to this arrangement and-”

“What? What did you just say?” Alpha Kilian snapped his attention to Alpha King Larry, instantly perplexed.

Alpha King Larry hesitated for a moment, realizing he had revealed too much. He glanced away, brushing it off by saying, “N-Nothing. What did I say?”

Alpha Kilian was certain he had heard Alpha King Larry correctly, and the nervous glances his grandfather cast only fueled his suspicion. “You said I asked for this arranged marriage with Nelly when I was young, Grandfather. So we’ve known each other since childhood?” he inquired, bewildered.

“What if you did meet her when you were young? Alpha Wade and I have been friends for over fifty years, so is it so strange that you and Nelly would be acquainted as well?” Alpha King Larry responded. “It’s getting late. Let’s call it a day,” he added before rising to retire to his bedroom.

“Grandfather!” Alpha Kilian called out, urging him to stay. “It’s only fair that we were acquainted. But the way you spoke… It seems like you’re hiding something from me.”

“What could I possibly be hiding from you? There’s nothing of the sort!” Alpha King Larry insisted.

“Well, either you tell me, or I’ll discover it on my own. I’m certain I can uncover something through investigation,” Alpha Kilian stated confidently.

Alpha King Larry turned back and sighed in resignation. Sitting down, he began, “This is a painful part of Alpha Wade and Nelly’s past, so please refrain from mentioning it in their presence and exacerbating their wounds.”

“What happened?” Alpha Kilian’s narrowed eyes revealed his apprehension.

“It took place twenty years ago. I had retired and found myself with plenty of time on my paws. I would often play chess with Alpha Wade to pass the time. I brought you along, and that’s when you met Nelly. Her parents were frequently absent during her upbringing, leaving her socially awkward and isolated. Despite your usual aloofness, you displayed a different side around Nelly. From the initial meeting, you were fond of her, always wanting to be in her company. You even told me you wished to marry her when you grew up, pleading for my assistance. That’s why I had a discussion with Alpha Wade and arranged the marriage…” Alpha King Larry explained.
