“Sir where to?” James, Marks assistant inquired when they got to the car, as they had just landed at the airport from his business trip.
“Drop me off to the mansion. I need to talk to grandpa.” He responded checking his phone briefly then tucked it in his pocket. “Any progress on the case I asked you to investigate?” Inquiring, he looked out of the window at the tall buildings along the way, with her face constantly popping up in his mind.
“No, we are still working on it, but we can only get to them through Ms White.”
“I can’t risk her safety to bring down the organization.” He said running his figures along his chin, wishing he could keep Melissa out of the way.
“She is in deep in this, and they are going to target her, especially when they find out she is trying to dig information of what happened to her father’s company.” James informed him handed him an iPad with Melissa’s recent activities.
“Ms White has been meeting up with the people who worked with her father, requesting for financial statements and her fathers last movements before the accident. First it was her fathers former secretary, and though it was a secret meeting, our men were able to follow her undetected. If she gets any information about the organization, or gets any closer, they will kill her.” As he explained, he looked at Mark knowing how hard it could be, dealing with an investigation that threatened the people close to him.
Though James was is assistant, he was his close friend too, having worked together for many years way before he took over the company.
“I’ll do everything I can to protect her, and take down the organization.” Mark said staring at the smiling face on the screen. “Find her father’s last contact and set a meeting with him. He may have information that we can use without involving her.” Handing the iPad back to James, he gazed out the window as the car drove from the city.
“Okay sir, I’ll contact him again but its not easy to get to him. We only find him if he wants to be found.”
“He most probably want to talk to us, after all he sent us the information about the organization.”
“Okay, I’ll make contact and set a meeting.” James said as they drove through a gate adorned with green trees and beautiful flowers making the air flesh and sweeter.
“Take my suitcase to the villa, I’ll drive myself there.” He ordered stepping out of the car as it stopped at the mansion’s door.
Looking around at the place that never changed, always blooming with flowers all seasons, Mark sighed, bracing himself for the difficult conversation he had to have with the old man.
“Welcome sir.” As the doors opened, the housekeeper received him with a pleasant smile on her face, then showed him to the office where his grandfather was working. Though Mark was in charge of the company, his grandfather made sure to check all the operations and the monthly financial reports.
“Hello Grandpa.” Pushing the half opened door, Mark walked in to find the old man busy working on the numerous documents on his desk. “The doctor said you should rest, Why are you still in the office?” With raised eyebrows, he questioned the stubborn old man.
Though old Mr Johnson had suffered a minor heart attack, forcing him to bed rest, he couldn’t neglect the company. It was his family business for generations, and though he handed it to his grandson, he felt it was still his responsibility.
“I see my grandson is finally back.” Taking off his reading glasses, he squinted his eyes at Mark. “You expect me to stay in bed all day? This work is my life, if I rest too much I’ll die before my time. So I keep my self busy checking how you’re running the company.”
“You should trust my capabilities, I have shown you how good I am already grandpa, right?”
“I trust you son, the company is doing much better than when your father was in charge but I should keep checking on it when I’m still around. If you need any help you can always consult this old man.” He said coughing a little then drunk some water.
Knowing the company was his grandfather’s legacy, that he had worked on all his life, Mark didn’t question further, he only planned to reduce amount of documents handed to him.
“Why didn’t you inform me you were coming, so I can call your future wife for dinner. She has come here several times hoping to see you, and now that your back we should plan the official engagement party as soon as possible.” The old man stated as Mark sat on the office chair.
“Precisely what I came to talk to you about, grandpa.”
“That’s my boy. You came to set the date, didn’t you.” The old man beamed sitting up straight. “Then in a months time, you can hold the wedding.”
“No, not really. We won’t push through with the engagement party, since I won’t marry Sasha.”
“What?” Slapping the table, he stood up as his face darkened. “What did you say? Are you trying to annoy me to death, boy? We promised your marriage to her family. How do we cancel that now?” As he spoke, he got more agitated causing him to cough uncontrollably.
“Come down grandpa, please calm down. Your health is not good, you might get sick again.” Helping the old man sit on the sofa, Mark poured another glass of water handing him his medicine.
“Huh, now you think of my health.” The old man sneered taking the medicine.
“The marriage will go on as planned, you can’t just change it.” Old Mr Johnson stated firmly.
“I don’t want to marry someone I don’t love, someone I can’t stand being with.” Mark stated trying to convince the old man.
“That poor girl loves you so much, isn’t it enough for both of you? Besides, she has been waiting for you to come from your business trip to arrange the official engagement.”
“But grandpa.”
“No buts, my word is finale.”
