CHAPTER 14
Judith POV
“Yes, I would love to have a drink”, he said affirmatively
I was thinking he was going to reject my offer, he must have been really tired and thirsty, after a long day at the office, he still offered to help me. He seemed quite different from what people tagged him to be but could a hundred people be wrong? Or maybe he has multiple personality disorder.
The door was unlocked and we made our way inside, the house is warm and cozy. “So good to be home”, I thought.
“Welcome to my home Mr. Nathan”.
“Wow, the place is really nice” he said, looking, around with admiration.
“Please have a seat, and let me get the drink”, I said.
“Okay” he said as he sat down at the cushion nearest to him
“Oliver and Olivia, go inside your room while I microwave the snack and come bath you”
“Mommy, the sandwich”, Olivia said and pouted. She have the habit of always pouting wherever she’s sad or disappointed.
“Olivia, mommy is tired. You know she’s still going to help with the assignment. She can make sandwiches some other time”, Oliver said, sounding so considerate and matured.
“Mommy isn’t tired, Oliver. I’m going to make sandwiches for dinner”, I said with a faint or, probably a tired smile.
Oliver has always been a sweet and considerate child. He tries to help with the chores sometimes even when I decline, and he hardly shows displeasure over something unlike Olivia. But what can I do? All children can’t be the same.
“I can help you with your assignment guys”, he said.
“No, Mr. Nathan, you’ve really done enough for us. Let me just get the drinks and then you can leave to rest for the day”.
“A few more minutes won’t hurt. so I insist. Let me help”.
I’m not comfortable with him helping, but I could really use a hand because I was really tired. But if there’s anything I despise and avoid so much that will be my children noticing my tiredness. I always try to stay strong and fit for them, so they don’t see themselves as a burden.
“Okay, then the assignment first before shower”, I said and headed to the kitchen.
I opened the fridge and bought out 5 leftover sausages, putting them in the microwave. I could hear their voices from the kitchen as interacted with them while doing the assignment. He seemed really different, and I begin to wonder if what Vanessa said about him liking me was true. Never in my wildest imagination did I ever think that he would be willing to drive us home, be sitting in my humble home and also helping my kids with their assignments.
The sausages were ready and I served a cold fruit juice in a glass cup. I put everything in a tray and walked to the living room.
“Mr. Nathan, please manage this. I don’t have wine at home” I said as I handed him a plate with 2 sausages and a glass of drink.
“It’s fine, I love fruit juice more, thank you”.
I also served myself and the twins, each with a sausage roll and a drink each.
He took a bite and asked “you made this?”
“Yes”.
“This is the first meal I’m eating today, and I don’t usually do snacks but I really love this. Thank you”.
I nodded and smiled. First meal today? That is very bad. I hope he puts more attention to himself and his health.
We finished eating while they continue with the assignment. I could hear the kids laugh as I did the dishes in the kitchen. How I wish the twins have a father figure in their lives; it would have made them really happy.
This is not the kind of life I want for myself and the twins. Single parenting can be difficult and tiring. I might consider marriage in the future for the sake of my children, but where would I find a good man that will take care of my kids as his? Such men are rare but I really wish a miracle would happen, and my kids and I will find a man who will cherish and love us.
I got over my thoughts as I finished up the dishes and went to the living room, they were already done with the assignment when he stood up to leave.
“I would like to take my leave now.”From NôvelDrama.Org.
“You really relieved me today. Thanks so much Mr. Nathan. Oliver, Olivia, Mr. Nathan is leaving. Say thank you to him”.
“Thank you sir”, they chorused.
“Why is he leaving? I thought he is daddy”, Oliver said, with disappointed face
Immediately she said that, my countenance changed. The kids have never asked me about their dad. I guess they must have figured out that they should have a dad since other kids at preschool have both parents.
“No he’s not dad” I managed to say.
I looked at him and he has this unexplainable look on his face, like he was somewhat scared, sad or, maybe dumbfounded.
“I’m your mum friend”, he bent over and said to them.
“Will you come visit us next time? Oliver asked.
“Yes I will”, he said and waved them goodbye.
I saw him off to the garage.
“Mr. Nathan, you don’t have to mind the kids and please help me get through to the mechanic. Good night sir”.
“I will mind them. They seem so smart. They are good kids. You did a good job raising them” he complimented
“I know, right. They are all have got”, I said with a faint smile, I’m sure he noticed my mood swing, since Oliver asked the question earlier. The question pierced my heart and made me feel sorry for my kids.
He was about opening his car door, when he suddenly turned and walked back to me. He came back to where I was standing. I was hoping he forgot something when he dropped the bombshell and asked a heart piercing question.
“I hope this won’t be me crossing boundaries and prying into your private life, but what about their father? Is he late or he is just being irresponsible?
