Chapter 21 Unexpectedly
Nicolo ordered Adams to get the car and they drove right away to the hospital. Don Augustus ran outside his office as soon as he heard Nicolo shouting.
They were thankful that she didn’t hit her head on the floor as Nicolo was able to catch her before she completely fell. Nicolo calls Dr. Travis and tells him they’re on their way. Detective Wright, though worried, bid his goodbye.
” What happened, Nicolo? ”
Don Augustus anxiously asked while he kept looking back and forth from the unconscious Mirage and the front of the car. He’s terribly nervous.
Nicolo rubbed his hand on his forehead and exhaled nervously too.
” I. I don’t really know. She picked up a photo that slipped from the folder that Detective Wright had and she just stared at it. She gave back the photo and then she left. ”
He answered.
Don Augustus was still trying to comprehend what is happening but he understands that Nicolo isn’t making sense. He could feel that there’s more. He just nodded and looked out at the road as they drove down. They reach the hospital quickly as soon as possible so they can check in with doctor Travis about Mirage.
They arrived and the nurses guided them to where the doctor was waiting for them. He explained to Nicolo that there is an internal bleeding in Mirage after he checked on her, she needs a follow up surgery immediately.
Nicolo was shocked to hear this but he knows that if they don’t do something, it could cause complications. Dr. Travis assured Nicolo that the only reason why she was even conscious was because of the shock and adrenaline from the situation.
And so they thought again that everything’s gonna be okay.
Until they found out that this woman won’t wake up again after having to undergo another operation and that it’s been two weeks since she was admitted.
Everyone felt so lost about how things went wrong that day. It’s almost like they have all failed somehow. Like if that photo doesn’t fall into her hand, she would still be awake right now.
Doctor Travis just finally finished his report when Nicolo and Don Augustus arrived.
” You should be aware that she will be fine, she just needs time and care. We’ll keep her here in the ICU for further observation. ”
Nicolo gave a small smile.
” Thanks doc, we appreciate you.”
Dr. Travis sighed and patted Nicolo’s shoulder.
” I know it’s hard, and I wish there was something more we could do. ”
The Doctor replied with a sympathetic face and then turned and walked toward the elevator.NôvelDrama.Org © 2024.
They entered the ICU without saying anything. Nicolo didn’t want to make any noise and Don Augustus wasn’t sure what to say. The room was full of silence.
No one moved a single muscle. The silence was getting louder and more suffocating as each second passed by. Nicolo couldn’t take it anymore.
” I’m sorry, Gramps. If only she didn’t see Elven’s photo, maybe she isn’t like this now. ”
” Do you think she’ll wake up? ”
Don Augustus asked Nicolo who’s currently leaning against the wall next to the door.
” Of course, I’m sure she’s going to wake up anytime soon.”
Nicolo tried to comfort his grandpa but even himself was thinking that it might not actually be the case.
It has been two weeks since the incident happened.
No sign of her waking up. They were just looking at her laying motionless and silent in her bed.
Nicolo’s heart clenched as a tear fell on his grandpa’s eyes.
This whole situation feels like a nightmare. A bad dream that will never end not until she wakes up.
” I know it may sound pathetic and indifferent coming from me but I feel like nothing else matters to me now other than her well being. ”
” She will be fine, Gramps. Everything will be fine. She’s been through much worse. ”
Don Augustus smiles.
” Yeah, I know, son. Things are gonna turn around soon. She just has to wake up. ”
Nicolo looked up and sniffed trying to prevent his tears and tried to believe in some false hope himself. The older man walked toward him and patted him on his shoulder.
Nicolo smiled and wiped the single tear that fell from his eye.
They sat silently in the room watching over Mirage. She looks peaceful and calm. Even though they’ve known her for only a short time, he knows that he can trust her and he wouldn’t want anything different. He’d rather die than lose her again.
Nicolo’s mind drifted away and thought about what happened. He just wants Mirage to be happy and safe. And yet, this still happens. Maybe it was fate or destiny, something that’s supposed to happen whether they like it or not. Who knows! All he knows is that he hopes everything turns out alright.
” Do you think it is best for her not to see her husband for now? ”
Nicolo asks Don Augustus while he tries to convince himself that everything is going to be okay. His grandfather sighs.
” I think it’s for the better Nick, don’t you think?”
Nicolo nods as he looks down at his feet.
After a few minutes of waiting in silence, Nicolo stood up and announced that he’s going outside to grab something to drink or eat. As he walks towards the door, he hears Don Augustus calling his name.
Nicolo turned his head in confusion and saw his grandfather standing near the window.
He walked toward him and stopped right beside him. Don Augustus stared out the window for a few seconds before turning to face his grandchild.
” I know she loves her husband. And as much as I love her and respect her husband, I can’t help but worry that bringing them back together will just make things worse for her. Especially since she still doesn’t remember him and he doesn’t even know that she’s alive… ”
” If she wakes up… and I’m hoping that it’ll happen soon, I don’t want her to be ever like this again. It feels like she’s dying every time. ”
Nicolo knew that his grandfather was right, especially after everything that happened. He also can’t help but worry about how his sole photo brings her back into a coma again. What more will happen to her if they meet in person?
Nicolo waved the scary thoughts inside his head. For now, he will tell Elven everything. But he will explain and make him understand that because of Mirage’s health condition…
they can’t be together.
