Chapter 7
Jason was one of the people that came to work early on Tuesday morning, which was odd, and me being one of these people made me cross paths with Jason’s anger.
He started with the files that the last secretary had left incomplete and asked why I hadn’t done them and why I didn’t reply to his last text last night.
“I slept off”
“You slept off while your boss was texting you?”
“I’m sorry, sir.”
“You don’t have to. This shows how serious you really are with your work.”
“I’m really sorry, sir.”
“I said you don’t have to! And mind you, I want all those files unfailingly today.”
“But…”
“No but. You may go.”
I went back to my office with a hectic headache and took out all the necessary files, which I knew I had no way of finishing in two days, and started going through them.
I met up with Stephanie during lunch, and she told me a couple of things about Jason.
“I heard Mr. Stokes show his other side today.”
“Absolutely, I almost freaked out.”
“You’re going to get used to it.” Stephanie said and smiled.
“I doubt that.”
“Of course, you will get used to it. Everyone of us did. But I think it has something to do with Dixie.”
“Who is Dixie?”
“His girlfriend. His anger always has something to do with her.”
I involuntarily spilled out the Sprite that I was about to swallow inside my tray and asked, “He has a girlfriend?”
“Are you okay?”
“Of course yes. Did he really have a girlfriend?”
“Of course he does. Why are you affected? Don’t tell me you are falling for our boss.”
“Absolutely not. I can’t just believe that anybody can be in a relationship with that freak.”
“I think freaks too deserve to be loved.”
“Maybe”
I could hardly do anything right after that afternoon incident because the thought of Jason having a girlfriend still couldn’t sit well with me.
‘If he has a girlfriend that he truly loves, why is he cheating on her with me? Did he get me a job because he wanted to cheat more on his Dixie with me? If that is the case, I’m going to prove him wrong. I decided to continue with my work.
The company was as quiet as a graveyard when I checked the time, which was 6:32 p. m., and the fear of being the only one still in the office made me make up my mind and pack some files to work on later that night. And I was about to pick up my bag and leave when the adjoining door opened.
I became instantly alert and prepared to defend myself if I had to.
“I didn’t mean to scare you. I brought you a burger” Jason said.
“Thanks, but I’m not hungry.”
“I know you are. Have some bites.”
I collected the burger, but I made no effort to eat it.
“Are you through with the files?” He asked and made his way to my seat.
“No, but I’ve packed some to take home.”
“You don’t have to; drop those. You need your rest.”
“Thanks”
“Seat down and eat your burger,” he said, motioning me to the other chair. “And what drink do you care for?”
“Any,” I replied.
He came back with two glasses of wine and handed one to me, which I sipped instantly because I’d been thirsty for some time.Belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - All rights reserved.
“Wow, this tastes good.”
“It does”
“Name?”
“Merlot. It’s my favorite.”
“It’s Cool”
“So, how was your day?” He teased and gulped his drink.
“Stressful, thanks to you.”
“I didn’t mean to be that hard.”
“But you were.”
“I’m sorry,” he said, leaving to refill his cup.
“That sounds strange coming from my boss.”
“This is not a working hour.”
“Meaning?”
“Meaning right now, I’m not your boss. You can call me Jason.”
“Like seriously?”
“Yes”
“Noted”
We chatted throughout my eating, and I was surprised when there was nothing left out of the burger.
“But you said you weren’t hungry,” he said, and he gulped the rest of his drink.
“I thought I wasn’t. I didn’t know you drank this much.”
“Sometimes”
I packed my cup for cleaning and wanted to take his when he drew me closer to him and drew my head down for a long kiss, which I couldn’t resist.
“I want to fuck you,” he said into my mouth.
“Likewise, but I need to get some things straight first.”
“Like what?”
“Like knowing your relationship status.”
He stared at me for some time before answering.
“I’m single, but I’m not ready to commit myself to a serious relationship.”
“Are you sure that is the truth?”
“Yup. I missed you,” he said, drawing me more to himself.
“Who is Dixie, then?” I asked
He released his hands and gave me an intense look.
“How do you know Dixie?” He asked quietly.
“It shouldn’t be a shock to you when it was easier for you to find out who I was.”
“What I did was check your ID when you were in the restroom, and I later did some background checks.”
“Consider mine too, for some background checking.”
“Lexi, joke apart, who told you about Dixie?”
“No one. I found out on my own, and that isn’t the only thing; she also has an appointment with you on Thursday.”
“It’s not what you think. Dixie isn’t my girlfriend; she is just a girl I used to fuck.”
“Okay, but I’m still worried.”
“You shouldn’t be because you are the one I want now.”
“And tomorrow, it’s going to be someone else, and you’re going to be repeating the same: ‘Lexi isn’t my girlfriend; she is just a girl I used to fuck'”
“What do you want?”
“Something that will give me hope. A relationship”
He got out of the chair instantly, as if I’d burned him, and his expression once again became hard.
“I’m not interested in being anybody’s fool! I’m not interested in a relationship!” He said sharply, “I can give you a ride if you’re ready to go,” he added while making his way to his office.
“No need. I’m going to order an Uber.”
“Ok”
I got home, freshened up, and was about to go to sleep when a message popped up on my phone.
‘You awake?’
I ignored the message and went under my blanket when another message popped up.
‘I know you’re still awake. I’m sorry for being a dick.
‘Why should I accept your apology when you have no control over your temper’
‘You should and you must because I’m your boss’
‘Okay sir, I’m going to accept your apology when I’m in the office tomorrow’
‘Are you feeling sleepy yet?’
‘No, you?’
‘Same. What is the color of the pant you’re putting on?’
‘None. Just me and my blanket’
‘You mean you sleep naked?’
‘Absolutely’
‘Good night’ he texted
‘Good night? I thought you weren’t feeling sleepy yet.
