Chapter 13 Could he love me already?
The silence that followed Blaine’s question was so loud that the only sound that could be heard was Blaine’s heavy breathing as he waited for an answer to that question.
” Mavis, didn’t you hear what Blaine asked?” Her mother asked but as much as Mavis wanted to deny it, the way Blaine’s stare was boring through her made her so uncomfortable. Besides, there is no point in being here since the reason she came was to confront her mother about the debts she inherited – which she already did.
After thinking about it critically, she decided she should just turn around and leave but the second she started to act on her actions, her mother started to laugh so maniacally that Blaine got so annoyed.
” Will you just shut up Laura?!” He barked, startling both Mavis and her mother because they didn’t expect him to react like that. Even though Mavis was so infuriated with her mother, she felt a bit vindicated by the way Blaine shut her mom down.
” What the hell was that for? Is that how you treat a client?” Her mother asked, glaring at Blaine so fiercely but Blaine wasn’t listening to her. All his focus was on Mavis. He needed to know if Mavis was pregnant, not that he was expecting this to happen, but if it was true – if she was really pregnant he needed to know because he had no intention of letting any of his children live the life his past ones have.
” Mavis,” he called softly, moving closer to Mavis who was still in shock by how he’d yelled at her Mom.
” Are you pregnant?” He asked, looking into her eyes which has somehow gotten filled with tears that would pour down her cheeks at any moment.
” Wait a damn minute, Mavis, are you sleeping with him too? Is Blaine a potential Baby daddy?” Her mother, Laura asked with a slight smirk on her face before she burst into spasms of laughter.
” I knew you weren’t as good as you claimed to be. Always accusing me of being a whore yet here you go, AGAIN” Laura said and that’s when Mavis started to break. She didn’t want to cry, she didn’t want to remember the memory her mother had just sparked up in her. A memory that she banished from her mind the second she realized that she was pregnant.
” Stop it, Laura, what’s your problem even? Isn’t she your daughter? You shouldn’t say such things to her.” Blaine said as he pulled Mavis closer to him and wrapped her in his arms. Mavis didn’t dare to push him away, because she knew that she needed a hug now more than anything and with the way she was feeling so hurt, she knew that she couldn’t even be selective about who the hug comes from.
” Listen, Mr. Rider. Yes, she’s my daughter. I gave birth to her, I know what she does, what she thinks, and how she responds to things” Laura started with a smug expression on her face. ” And I can tell you that you’re nothing special to Mavis. She always does this… every time.” She added and gave a very unsympathetic look at Mavis who was sobbing and shaking as she held unto Blaine.
” What are you talking about?” Blaine asked one part of him curious for the answer and the other part telling him to just walk out of there with Mavis. He would ask Mavis about it instead of her crazy mother and that was exactly what he decided to do but unfortunately for him, Laura was a faster speaker than he was a mover.
” Well, every time Mavis suffers a break-up, she always – always ends up going to blow off some steam somewhere where she hooks up with a man who is ALWAYS a wealthy man,” Laura revealed with a smile. But Blaine didn’t understand. So what if she always ends up hooking up with wealthy men in situations like that? She’s a drop-dead gorgeous woman who pulls rich men. There’s no crime in that – he thought.
” And the last time she did that, she ended up pregnant with the man’s child and because she knew that she is just as terrible as me when it comes to raising children, she got rid of a living child – almost took her life but she still did it with the coldest heart ever. To me, that’s the most wicked thing a mother could ever do to her child. When I was pregnant with Mavis, I wasn’t married and I really wanted to get rid of her but I kept her because her father begged me to. But Mavis is so wicked that she -”
“- that’s enough! This has nothing to do with wickedness. If she doesn’t want to keep this one either then that’s her choice. Better that than being a pain to her own child like you are to her.” Blaine said to Laura, his eyes seething with fury and disgust as he looked at the woman who Mavis was unfortunate enough to call her mother.
” Wow. How good was she in bed that you’re hurling insults at me?” Laura asked with a scoff.
” Everything isn’t about sex all the time Laura. Sometimes it’s about love, not everyone appreciates a woman because of her body.”
” Oh, so you love her now? Ugh! You’re kids, you have no idea what’s going on between you two”
” And you have no idea what love is since you threw it away for a man half your age that’s definitely cheating on you right now. I guess you have an idea about that at least.” Blaine said and carried Mavis in his arms as he walked down the steps and placed her in his car.
” You two won’t even last two weeks together. Mark my words Rider, she’s the worst thing that’ll happen to you ” Laura yelled angrily as he started his car and zoomed out of her house.
Mavis sat in the passenger’s seat while Blaine drove and tried to hold back her tears but she was so hurt by the way her mother mocked her. She kept feeling so many emotions like the relief she got when Blaine kept helping her say things to her mother that she’d never been bold enough to her and that flutter in her heart when he insinuated that he loved her.
” How can he love me already?” She wondered.Material © of NôvelDrama.Org.
