The pain was sharp, but it was nothing compared to the emotional pain | felt. | let out a so b, the tears streaming down my face. The sound of the footsteps grew louder, and | could hear voices outside the door.

He began to clean and bandage the wound, his hands gentle and sure. “It’s going to be okay,” he said, his voice soft.
With his deft hands, he tied the bandage tight, and when he was done, he brushed the stray hairs from my face.
“Tell me,” he said, his voice hardening, “who did this to you?”
| looked up at him, my eyes pleading. “Please, Kex, don’t make me say it. | would rather not cause more trouble.”
He cupped my face in his hands, his eyes softening. “You are not causing trouble, Emily. | need to know who hurt you, so | can make sure they never do it again.”
“It's Ne... lly,” | stuttered.
My words hung in the air between us, and Rex’s eyes widened in shock. He took a deep breath, trying to compose himself. “What happened?” he asked, his voice steady.

“Take a breath,” he said, his voice calm.

“How dare she!” He said, clenching his fist together.
“Calm down, Kex,” | said, my voice barely above a whisper. “This is precisely why | didn’t want to tell you.”
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, releasing it slowly. When he opened his eyes, his expression was more composed. “Please, go on,” he said, his voice gentle.

“Kex!” | called, my voice shaking. He didn’t stop or turn around, and | felt a sinking feeling in my stomach. “Kex, please, wait!” | begged, but he was already out of sight.
| wiped the tears from my face, though | knew my attempt at deception was poor. | turned around, almost hitting Harry.
“Harry!” | exclaimed, giving him a half-hearted smile. “You startled me.” | feigned a s ob, though | knew it was unconvincing. “Please, go stop Kex. He’s going to do something bad.”
Harry looked at me, concern etched on his face. “Which way did he go?” he asked, his voice urgent.
