Chapter 121
RITA'S PÓV
It's been days since the awkward moment between Alpha Atlas and I. So far, I was doing a good job avoiding him.
However, this was his mansion and Emma was not making it easier. I had to find my way away from here. I know I had promised Alpha Atlas to keep my ears down for any form of gossip that hinted on who tried to poison him, but so far, I have been unproductive, so I saw no need to remain here. I had to leave.
My chest began to ache. I would miss this place though. I would miss Rita and Leo and Aunt Freya. They were all above me and I was a stranger to them, but they treated me like their own. I was grateful to them for that.
There was a soft knock on the door and Emma ran to open the door.
It was one of the mansion's maids. "Greetings," She greeted me and I greeted her back.
"Elder Leo and Rita are throwing a family dinner and she wants you there," the maid announced.
"Okay, thank you."
She left and Emma began to jump for joy. "Come on mom," Emma beckoned on me. "We should go now. I'm sure they are waiting for us."
I looked away from her and frowned. "I don't want to have dinner with anybody. If you want to go, I will take you there, but I am not joining you."
"Why? Are you now fighting with anybody? Is anything making you uncomfortable?" Emma's concern touched me, but I had no idea how I would explain things to her.
"I am not fighting with anybody." I thought of Alpha Atlas almost immediately and then I pushed him away from my thoughts. I was not ready to keep on thinking about him. He was a part of my past now. "I have something extremely important to do," I lied.
I had promised myself never to go near him before now and then he approached me, rejected me and began to act nice and when I was beginning to fall for him, he pushed me away.
I made a fist when I recalled how he pushed me. He pushed me away like I was a piece of rag. I just couldn't get over that.
"If you're not going, then I am not. I will help you with whatever things you have to do" Emma said and I felt bad immediately. It made me wonder if I was being a good mother or not. What lesson was I teaching Emma? Very soon, she will know that I was lying. There was another knock on the door and I walked over to the door and opened it. Rita was the one at the door and I quickly ushered her in.
"Have you received my dinner invitation?" She asked.
""Yes, I did."
She looked at me and then at Emma. It looks like you don't want to come for dinner.
My face fell.
".." My voice trailed off. "I have something important to do."
"You do? I will be glad to help."
I laughed nervously. "You want to help? I don't think you should You have a dinner to prepare for," I pointed out and she scoffed.
"Dinner can wait. What you have to do seems really urgent?"
I did not know what to say next, so I kept quiet and looked away again.
She bent down before Emma. "Will you wait outside for me? I'll take you to the dining room after talking to your mom."
Emma nodded and left the room. "You're lying, aren't you?" She asked when she was sure that my Emma was far enough.
"I don't want to come. I would prefer to have my dinner in this room," I said and she just looked at me and said nothing until I was done talking.
"Is that so or are you trying to avoid my son?"
My face turned red. How did she figure that? I wondered.
"I have been watching Atlas and you. It looks like the both of you got into a fight or something. You have been trying your best to avoid him. Is there anything that I should know?"
I shook my head in denial.
differences. "See, I can help you choose a seat at the table that will help you avoid Atlas until the both of you sought out your But, I am inviting you to dinner and you have to honor me. If not, I doubt if I will be happy if you do not come. I organized this dinner because I wanted us to eat as one big family. I enjoyed it the last time we had dinner that way and I want that to happen again."
"I wish I could come, but I am afraid that I might burst into tears if I lay my eyes on Atlas."
She gave me a pitiful look.
"I saw what happened the other day after Emma's party. One of my earrings was missing. I came back to the living room to get my old earring and I saw what happened."
I cried the more and she began to pet me.
"We should take a walk," Rita suggested and I nodded in agreement.
We strolled to the garden and decided to continue our discussion there.
"Atlas did not pull away because he hates you. From what I have noticed he actually likes you, but there is something holding him back. There is another she-wolf involved."
"Oh!" My heart shattered into a thousand pieces.
"Not in a romantic way though," She clarified and I felt a little better. "Let's say Atlas lost someone's child when they were both younger and he has grown with guilt since then. So, he is not planning to get a mate until he has found the child he has lost. I am pretty sure that if this was not the situation on ground he would have kissed you and I would have been expecting a positive pregnancy result."
"That is just sad," I pointed out. "I hope he finds who he is looking for."
"Me too."
"Nam planning on leaving though," I said and Rita looked a little unhappy.
""You are?"

I nodded. "I sincerely wish the Alpha the best, but I don't think I would be able to bear the emotional trauma associated with trying to be close to Alpha Atlas. Plus, I am not very interested in becoming the Luna of this pack, so it's good he rejected me. A few days from now, I will be leaving this mansion. I have not told anybody of my plan except you.
"There's someone behind that bush," Rita said, looking at the bush. It made me wonder if she had been listening to me all this while. I looked at the bush she was looking at.
She walked toward the book and she turned out to be right because when she was about to get close to the bush, the person hiding got out of the bush. The person was dressed in black from his head down to his toe.
Rita and I ran after him, but he was faster than us. He jumped up the fence.
Rita took out a pocket knife, aimed at him and it struck him on his right shoulders.
