Chapter 617
Chapter 617
"I mean..." I started, but suddenly I couldn't think of what to ask him.
Yolande seemed to know what I was about to ask, so she took the initiative.
"You know he was in the military, but what you don't know is that he was part of a covert ops unit. He spent three years in international conflicts, and in that time, he took down the world's most dominant criminal organization. As for the likes of Brown and Henrik, they're just the small fries."
"After Ernest finished his job, he came back home and hung up his boots. All he wanted was a normal life. But the whole Jefferson affair made him realize those minor threats were rearing their ugly heads again. There are even some out there vowing revenge for their fallen leaders. Ernest knows better than anyone how dangerous they can be. They can't touch him directly, so they're bound to go after the people close to him." Yolande glanced at me, "That's why he broke things off with you, as well as the truth about his past and who he really is."
"You and him..." I wanted to ask if her deep understanding of Ernest was because they had been through battles together.
But at that moment, I couldn't seem to find the right words.
"Our relationship was a facade. He did it to protect you," Yolande said with a hint of a sad smile.
I could tell she felt alone.
Yolande took a deep breath and looked towards the emergency room door. continuing, "He knew those people would investigate him. Even if he broke it off with you, you could still be in danger. So, we pretended to be a couple, made it official to the public. That way, those people wouldn't pay you any mind."
"Why would you agree to that?" I asked, realizing as soon as I had that it was a foolish question.
Because she loved Ernest. It was obvious.
"Because I wanted to protect him," Yolande's response took me by surprise.
"To everyone else, he's invincible, like a god of war. But he's not. He can get hurt. So, I do whatever I can to protect him. That's why I stay by his side," Yolande finished with a smile towards me.
"You did it because you love him," I voiced the unspoken truth.
She nodded, no holds barred, "Yeah, I've been head over heels for him long before you came along. But... he never felt the same about me."
Yolande, so remarkable and so in
love with him, and yet Ernest
remained unmoved. How lucky was I
for him to have loved me, even if his seeming indifference was all for my protection.
I was speechless, as Yolande's words turned any resentment I had towards Ernest into a joke.
"Every time he ignored you or was cold, it hurt him more than anyone. There were times I saw him so down, a side of him I'd never seen before," Yolande turned back to me.
"You know if it weren't for all this, I wouldn't have told you any of this," Yolande said with a bittersweet smile. I admit I love him, but more than that, I want him to be happy."
They say love is selfish, but Yolande embodied its most selfless form.
Standing before Yolande, I suddenly felt unworthy of Ernest's love.
I had only ever looked at the surface, never questioning the true reason behind his sudden coldness, forgetting the promises he made.
It was my love for Ernest that wasn't strong enough; otherwise, I wouldn't have doubted all he had done for me at the mere mention of a breakup.
I was just a superficial person.
"Let's not think about any of that right now. Let's just pray he'll be okay," Yolande said, her fists clenched under her chin in prayer.
As she prayed, I silently stared at the emergency room door, enduring an agonizing wait until it finally opened.
The doctor came out, and Yolande immediately rushed over. "Doctor..."
