Chapter 297
Chapter 297
“My wrist wound will be fine even without applying medicine, you didn’t have to go out of your way to bring me ointment.”
Even so, Celeste still let Mason in.
She moved the clothes on the sofa aside and asked Mason to sit down. “Mr. Fletcher, would you like some water? Or lemonade?”
Mason nodded, “Sure.”
Celeste then poured a glass of lemonade for him.
Mason opened the bag, took out the ointment, and handed it to her. “Put some on your wound first.” Content rights belong to NôvelDrama.Org.
Celeste took it, thanked him with a smile, and then opened the ointment to gently apply it to her wrist.
Mason looked around the room and asked, “Where’s Liam?”
Celeste paused for a moment and chuckled, “No idea.”
Liam had gone out for some unknown reason, and she guessed he might have gone to find Sydney.
She pulled up her sleeve, revealing a patch of skin on her arm that was a different color than the rest, somewhat darker and not as smooth.
Mason stared at it for a while and asked, “Is that a birthmark on your arm?”
Celeste shook her head, “No, it’s not a birthmark. It’s a burn scar from before. My birthmark isn’t on my arm.”
After saying that, she suddenly remembered the burn scars on Mason’s body and felt it was inappropriate to continue discussing this topic.
Mason didn’t feel anything was wrong, and continued to ask, “How did you get burned?”
Celeste replied, “A few years ago, my mom and I were in a car accident. My mom was seriously injured and still hasn’t regained consciousness in the hospital. I was only slightly injured, and this scar is from that time.”
She spoke calmly, but even now, thinking back to the accident still gave her the chills.
It was the start of the university semester, and the company had arranged a driver to take her, but the driver couldn’t make it at the last minute. Caitlyn happened to be going out, so she offered to drop her off at school.
It was September, and there was a lot of rain, especially during the peak time for the start of school. The roads were crowded with cars. It wasn’t until they reached the elevated highway and the ring road that the traffic began to improve.
Caitlyn was on the phone the whole time she was driving. Celeste was wearing headphones, listening to music.
When the car turned, a truck suddenly changed lanes. Caitlyn instinctively turned the steering wheel to the left, causing the car to veer into another lane and collide head–on with a taxi. The car flipped over.
Celeste was trapped in the seat, unable to move, while Caitlyn was thrown out of the car.
After being taken to the hospital, Celeste was in a coma for many days. Not long after she woke up, the police came to question her.
The accident investigation showed that the brakes on their car had failed. This may have been caused by the heavy traffic that day, with Caitlyn frequently using the brakes. Additionally, investigators found anti–depressant medication in the car, leading them to believe that her mother may have been experiencing a bout of depression at the time. As a result, they suspected that she may have intentionally caused the accident.
No matter how much Celeste tried to explain that her mother was fine at the time, everyone remained skeptical.
Celeste wanted Shawn to help her find a lawyer to clear her mother’s name. But Shawn thought that if they proved her mother wasn’t experiencing an episode during the trial, then she would be considered fully capable, which would make the consequences much more severe.
If it was a depressive episode, her ability to act would be limited. In that case, they could negotiate a civil settlement with the taxi driver, and the amount of compensation wouldn’t be as high.
Only children care about justice, while adults care more about what is most beneficial for them.
The accident resulted in two deaths and one injury, and they ultimately paid just over a million US dollars in compensation. It was the first time Celeste felt that Shawn was cold–hearted and ruthless.
