My Most Precious Human

Chapter 47

Chapter 47

I didn't know how I got to work. I was so deep in thoughts that I might have rudely ignored Mike while

he drove me to the bank's headquarters. I retrieved my sanity for a second when I got out of the car

and felt the cool wind sweeping my face and neck without a scarf. Certainly, the sensation reminded

me of Sariel's cold lips touching my skin. A dumb smile appeared on my face. Fortunately, I managed

to see my idiotic expression in the reflection from the thick glass entrance before anyone else noticed it

and questioned my sanity. I slapped my face with both hands, as an act of self-punishment.

I entered the elevator along with other employees and started writing my to-do list in my mind. I entered

as the last and stood staring at the door. I minded my own business, but others didn't. There were

around ten people in that elevator, all focused on me. I could feel their gazes coming from each side. I

even started to wonder if my picture wasn't sent in some internal mail with a reward to claim for

bringing me dead or alive. I sighed.

"Ignore them, ignore them, ignore them…" I kept repeating it in my mind.

"Dirty slut." Someone spat.

"Greedy bitch!" someone else roared.

I kept my eyes looking forward while clenching my teeth. My reaction could only make things worse,

and the elevator wasn't exactly a good place to fight.

Some middle-aged man angrily poked my shoulder. "Hey! I'm talking to you, fucking whore!"

"Do you know that what you did is enough to press charges for both physical and verbal assault?" I

asked coldly, without turning my head to spare a glance at him.

"I can do anything, and no one here will speak against me! So you'd better shut the fuck up!" the man

chuckled spitefully.Content held by NôvelDrama.Org.

I guessed that his foolishness finally got to deserve my attention. I thought that this could even give me

some kind of entertainment. I turned around to see my opponents. There were four women in age

between twenty-five and forty, and six men, all middle-aged, or just looking old. They looked like simple

office workers or low-level managers.

I slowly raised my hand up pointing at the device on the ceiling. "There are three cameras in this

elevator, and at least one of them has a voice registration. I don't know what did I do to deserve such

treatment, but seriously, I don't give a damn what your problem is. I suggest you all call down and

shove your pitiful remarks deep inside the last segment of your large intestine." I grinned meanly.

Certainly, I lied. I was only one camera and had no idea even if it registered anything at all, but the

confident tone of my voice was enough to make them shut their mouths and step back. Of course, a

clear disdain in their expressions was still clearly visible, but at least they stopped spitting their venom

at me.

The elevator stopped at the 11th floor, the floor of the human resources department. I walked out of the

elevator, leaving a room for those who were getting off, and surprisingly, all of those hateful people left.

Each of them sent me a vicious glare at goodbye.

"And a lovely day at work to you too," I muttered under my breath and cliqued my tongue.

I begin to wonder if they all worked on that floor and if I had done anything wrong to anyone from HR,

but nothing came to my mind. Moreover, the only person I knew from that department was Monique.

She didn't like me from the start, and the feeling was mutual, but the hatred I received from those

people in the elevator was something much more intense than a fit of mere jealousy.

I got back to the elevator and rode the rest of the way up alone. When I finally managed to close the

door of my office I heaved a heavy sigh. My work didn't even start, and I already felt mentally

exhausted. This couldn't be a sign of anything good.

The second I sat down in my chair someone knocked at my door.

"Come in," I muttered, sensing trouble.

A young man with curly blonde hair, looking like he had just graduated from high school, entered my

office. His slightly blushing cheeks gave away that he was human. I gazed at him curiously while he

looked quite nervous. He smiled awkwardly while I waited for him to speak.

"You're pretty…" he mumbled.

I tilted my head. A question mark popped out on my face, along with a wry smile.

"I mean… I'm sorry!" He started bowing hectically, "Ms. Leber is really young and attractive. It caught

me by surprise…"

"Does it mean that I am supposed to be old and ugly?" I asked to tease him a bit.

"No! I didn't mean that! I'm sure that you will still be pretty when you are older! I mean… I thought that

you would be older…"

I chuckled, "That's ok. Thank you for a compliment." I cut off his frantic explanation.

Suddenly, he grinned, and we stared at each other in awkward silence. I took a deep breath.

"Mind telling me who you are and what you are doing in my office?"

"Oh, right!" He laughed nervously. "I'm Mateo Wallace. I am the CFO's second assistant. My boss

wanted me to ask you to come to his office. Immediately, if possible…"

"I see…" I glanced at him and smirked, "Lead the way."

A dumb grin painted on his face as he opened the door and gestured, letting me pass first. I forced

myself to put a courteous smile on my face but still felt a little awkward with the eagerness with which

Mateo followed Gabriel's order. I guessed that he enjoyed leading me to the CFO's office slightly too

much, especially since I could easily get there myself without his help.

Mateo tried acting gentlemanly and wouldn't even let me knock on the CFO's door. When Gabriel

responded, he opened the door for me, clearly announcing that he had gotten the job done. As soon as

I entered the office, Mateo bowed respectfully and left. Gabriel observed his ceremonious behavior

while raising his brows.

"He… He's new," he commented awkwardly when the door closed.

"Well… at least he doesn't hate me like the rest of the people here." I shrugged, wryly smiling.

"Yes… about that. I saw what happened in the elevator today." He smirked.

His words startled me, but at least now I knew for certain that I wasn't wrong about that camera in the

elevator. Still, I was slightly surprised that the news of this occurrence reached Gabriel's ears so

quickly.

"Do you keep me monitored?" I inquired, suspiciously.

"Sariel's orders," he stated casually, "Our security informs me of any form of unwanted behavior.

Rumors spread and the CEO predicted that you might be the target."

"Rumors again…" I muttered, a bitter grimace forming on my face. "Mind telling me, what is the current

reason those people have decided to hate me?" I asked, clenching my teeth.

"Nothing unexpected. People found out about your audit reports, and those punished for their

unforgivable mistakes decided to take it out on you." Gabriel shrugged. "Truthfully, after what I saw and

heard from this elevator footage, I wished I could fire them twice." He chuckled.

"W-what?" My jaw literally dropped.

"You know, those people who cursed you… You were unfortunate enough to meet them when they

were going for their last paychecks after their contracts had been terminated." He laughed wickedly.

A nervous smile appeared on my face while I was thinking about how many more people could get fired

because of my reports. Of course, those people could only blame themselves for losing their jobs, but

because of the previous rumor about me getting my job thanks to being a lover of either the CEO or

CFO, I became the target.

"Do you want to press charges? I'm all for it if you ask me." He smirked cunningly.

"No…" I sighed, "They just needed someone to release their frustration. I'm sure that there would be no

violence either way," I said it, even though I didn't feel too confident about my own words.

"All right, suit yourself. I am well aware that human courts don't always punish as they should. Anyway,

I just wanted to let you know that you shouldn't worry too much. Those angry humans won't work here

anymore." Gabriel grinned as if the fact that they were fired solved the entire problem.

"Thank you… for letting me know," I responded hesitantly.

One thing I knew for certain… This was only the beginning.
