Chapter 30
Chapter 30
I wondered how much time I had until the news that my report was the reason people got fired would
spread throughout the entire company. I started thinking that perhaps it would be wiser to hire
bodyguards. I could easily handle a few humans by myself, but fighting against an enraged crowd
could be troublesome. Certainly, the rational and, this time, optimistic part of my brain told me that I
was overreacting and that nothing bad would happen. In normal circumstances, I would expect people
to fear me more than openly declare war against me, but my situation was far from normal. I sighed
heavily, then got up, getting ready to leave the CFO's office.
"Goodbye, Mr. Foubert." I smiled faintly, walking towards the door.
"See you tomorrow, Ms. Leber." He winked at me teasingly.
I opened the door and bumped into someone.
"I'm sorry, I didn't see you.." I muttered, straightening my nose after it hit that person's hard male chest.
I looked up and saw a pair of cold reddish eyes, glowing like rubies, set in a pale face. The man looked
like he was out of this world. With his light blonde hair and whitest of white skin, he could have only
been an albino or a vampire. I guessed it was the second. I instinctively stepped back, creating more
distance between us.
"Frans, come inside already. Stop staring at my favorite employee," Gabriel called out to the man.
I abruptly stepped aside, letting him into the office. He glared at me while walking inside. I wondered if I
should introduce myself, but he didn't seem like a friendly person, so I smiled briefly at him and then
dashed to the corridor. As soon as I did, he shut the door. Belongs to NôvelDrama.Org - All rights reserved.
"What a rude bastard," I muttered and clicked my tongue.
Then I thought that this was vampires' normal attitude towards humans. Even Monique said that they
don't get along well with humans. It was almost sundown, so I guess it could have been one of the
commoners she mentioned. I shrugged, shaking off my annoyance, and went down to the car. It was
time to go and meet the Great Council.
Mike's cheerful mood took my mind off my anxieties concerning my testimony. It made me forget that
we weren't going back to the castle. I realized that our destination was different only when he suddenly
stopped the car in the middle of nowhere. Then he got out of the car and rushed to open the door for
me.
"Mike, why did you stop the car in the middle of a dusty road with nothing but a field and a few trees
around?" I asked with a nervous smile, looking around the place shrouded in mist.
"I apologize, Ms. Lilith. This is as far as I can take you. You will have to wait for the Duke's car to go
further, but don't worry! They should be here any minute," he claimed, doing his best to sound
convincing.
It looked like I had to trust his words. I sighed and got out of the car. He drove away, and I stood on the
deserted side road, looking like a bumbling idiot who had lost her way. That was the first moment when
I regretted that I didn't have a phone, but then I thought that even if I had a phone here, there would be
no reception…
"Mike… if no one is getting to take me away from here fast, I swear I'm going to find you and whoop
your ass!" I shouted in frustration after standing there for more than fifteen minutes.
The mist around me was strangely cold. It was autumn, but the early evenings weren't this cold,
despite that, I was freezing. Finally, I saw a black car on that empty road. It stopped right next to me.
The back seat window opened, and I saw Sariel's face.
"What are you waiting for? Get in!" His commanding voice instantly made my body move towards the
backseat door on the other side.
As soon as I was in the car, I sighed in relief. I could have been angry a minute ago, but now I was just
happy to sit somewhere where I wouldn't freeze. The driver started the engine. The Duke was sitting
beside me in the backseat, whereas Mr. Gotha was sitting in the front passenger's seat. Sariel looked
me up and down.
"Why are you trembling?" he asked, glancing at my shivering hands.
"I-it was c-cold out there…" I mumbled, recovering from cold way too slow.
"Leo, turn on the heat," he tossed, faking indifference.
I looked at him, completely surprised. Leo sighed, but immediately obeyed his master's command. The
warm air started filling the car. My hands stopped shaking.
"Thank you." I smiled weakly at Sariel.
"You cannot look as if I mistreated you after saving you from the casino. When you testify, you have to
look believable," he stated, explaining his previous behavior.
Even though he gave a reasonable excuse, I wanted to believe that he did it because he cared about
me… a little. I kept stealing glances at him, and our eyes met a few times. He didn't seem as angry or
cold as the night before. That made me feel more at ease.
Suddenly, the car arrived at a huge iron gate. I looked around, but I noticed no cameras or any other
security devices. There was only a big stone standing on the left side of the gate. The driver stopped
the car, got out, and walked to the stone. Then he took out a knife from his pocket and cut his hand,
letting his blood flow at the top of the stone. I flinched, observing this weird ritual. The drops of blood
seemed to sink into the stone. As soon as they disappeared, the gates opened. I gasped and nervously
gazed at Sariel and Mr. Gotha, but their faces showed merely impatience. The driver got back inside
the car and drove through the gate.
"How did he do that?" I mumbled softly.
"He didn't do anything." Mr. Gotha turned his head towards the back seat and scoffed at me, "The
stone has a hidden blood detector. Humans are not allowed to enter this place by themselves."
It looked like I had just made a fool of myself. For a second, I even thought that the gate was magical. I
guess if you live in a world among vampires and werewolves, you start to wonder if all of the fantasies
written in books are real. To recover from embarrassment, I decided to stay silent until we arrived at the
place.
The car stopped in front of the entrance to an enormous residence. It seemed even more grand than
Sariel's castle, but it was also darker and more ominous.
"These are the Great Council's headquarters. Let's go," Sariel stated and walked out of the car.
I dashed out, trying to keep up with him and Mr. Gotha as they made their way towards the entrance.
The servants of this place opened the door while the Duke was about to enter. I rushed to match his
pace, slightly afraid of walking around this residence alone. Suddenly, Sariel stopped and offered me
his elbow. My jaw almost dropped. His gentlemanly behavior surprised me again that day.
"Thank you." I smiled stupidly, delicately holding onto his arm.
He sighed and walked slower to match my pace. Mr. Gotha stayed silent, but I could see that his
master's actions were quite a shock to him. All the more, a smile didn't leave my face.
We walked through the long corridor until we reached its end and another grand door. There were two
guards standing on the sides. They straightened up once they saw the Duke. They opened the door as
we were getting closer.
Suddenly, the announcer's sonorous voice called out, "Entering the Duke of Calvet!"
Sariel smirked and pulled me closer, then he leaned over my ear and whispered, "It's showtime…"
