Chapter 60
She placed the broth beside him, announcing, “Your broth is here.” Content is © by NôvelDrama.Org.
He said nothing, his gaze fixed on the computer screen, clearly preoccupied with his task.
Candice remained seated on a sofa nearby, unsure if he would need her for anything else, not daring to leave.
She waited on the couch for approximately forty minutes for him to finish his task.
He glanced at her, his brow furrowed in confusion, “Why are you still here?”
“I thought you might need something else,” she replied.
“What else could there be?”
Alex closed his laptop with a blank expression, yet signs of exhaustion were visible on his face.
His gaze was drawn to the broth she had purchased.
As Candice rose to leave, he called out to her, his tone as cold as before, “Take the broth with you.”
Momentarily surprised, it took her a while before finally regaining her voice.” Wasn’t it for
you?”
“It’s cold now,” he said indifferently. “Just throw it away.”
After being left out for a long period, the broth had inevitably turned cold.
Candice felt utterly drained and still shivering from the biting cold she had endured outside, yearning for nothing more than to go back to her room and get some sleep.
She picked it up and returned to her room without saying anything. Indeed, the broth had turned cold.
Near the elevator was a trash can. She stood with the broth in hand,
contemplating for a moment before finally disposing of it in a trash can.
Back in her room, Candice lay in bed, restless and unable to sleep. She ended up staying awake until morning.
Despite her sleepless night, she was still required to visit the branch office today.
Dressed and ready, she descended to the lobby, only to find Alex and Nina already waiting for her.
Spotted her arrival, Nina greeted her with a fake smile, “Good morning, Ms. Renault.”
Candice slowed her pace slightly and apologized, “Sorry, I’m late.”
Nina, arms folded, eyed Candice unabashedly. She commented, “The secretary of Aether Corporation is indeed as capable as they say.”
The remark came out more as ridicule than as praise.
While Candice was unsure of what she had done to anger Nina, she noticed her boss’s nonchalant demeanor and had no intention of speaking up. She was compelled to suck it up.
Nina, on the other hand, was plainly determined to make things tough for her.
She began mocking her non–stop on the way to the branch office.
Frustrated, Candice eventually asked, “Ms. Burgess, may I ask how I have offended you?”
Nina turned her gaze to the window, her response lighthearted yet dismissive. ” Oh, how could someone as capable as Ms. Renault possibly offend me?”
Candice yearned to probe further, but a cautionary glance from Alex in the rearview mirror stopped her. She pursed her lips and drove on in silence.
The situation at Stugan’s branch office was dire, with internal problems and vicious competition from rivals.
Ava’s firm was the primary client for their branch. If Ava chose to sever ties, the branch would inevitably need to close down, and because of this, they could not offend Nina.
Upon their arrival at the office, Alex was the first to exit the vehicle. He then displayed a courteous demeanor, opening the car door for Nina.
For the day, Nina looked angelic in her lace dress and heels.
Observing Alex’s courteous act, Nina arched her eyebrows and gave Candice a challenging look.
She then reached out to Alex, requesting assistance. “Can you assist me? Walking
in these
heels are quite a challenge.”
Alex offered his hand indifferently. Nina took advantage of the chance to lean on
his arm.
In contrast, Candice who was tasked with driving, opted for practical flats.
She carried a stack of files that Nina had deliberately handed to her, as they made their way into the office building.
Candice remained silent throughout their walk, only speaking up as they approached the meeting room.
Then, she turned to Nina and stated politely, “I’m sorry, Ms. Burgess, but this meeting is meant for internal staff only. It might not be appropriate for you to join.”
