Chapter 52
Chapter 52
It took Candice a while to find her voice. She asked hoarsely, “Alex, are you doing this on purpose?”
“You’re overthinking it. You’re just suited for the task.”
Alex put down what he was holding, his ink-black eyes assessing Candice. He raised an eyebrow and
sneered, “What, would this interrupt your romance with Jackson?”
Candice looked at Alex, feeling a suffocating tightness in her chest. She had always thought that Alex treated
her differently.
But as it turned out, there wasn’t much of a difference.
Candice’s throat felt tight. After a moment of silence, she slowly said, “Fine, I’ll go to Stugan City.”
The mockery in Alex’s eyes intensified. He casually looked at Candice’s lips, which were red with lipstick.
“You can leave tomorrow morning…”
“Alex.” Candice interrupted him.
She looked at his stern brows, and a wave of weariness swept over her inexplicably.
It had been a long time.
She had been with Alex for a long time.
Long enough for him to grow weary.
“I won’t renew my contract when it expires,” she said.
Her words sounded so far away at this moment as if she were hearing her own voice from outside a bubble.
Something flickered in Alex’s eyes, and he narrowed his eyes at Candice. His expression completely darkened.
“Are you threatening me? Asking for additional benefits?”
Candice didn’t know how he came to that conclusion.
Wasn’t this the result he had always wanted?
She lowered her gaze and remained silent. In a cold and threatening voice, Alex said, “Fine, as long as you don’t regret it.” This content © Nôv/elDr(a)m/a.Org.
The news about Candice being assigned to the Stugan City branch came swiftly. The gazes from colleagues in the office were subtle, and only Kayla dared to approach her and ask, “Candice, how long does Mr. Elysian plan on stationing you there?”
“I don’t know,” Candice answered truthfully but didn’t mention her intention to resign.
In the afternoon, Candice packed up her belongings and went to the sanatorium after work. Since she was heading to Stugan City, she decided to visit her grandfather.
Joe knew that Candice and Alex had broken up and had stopped mentioning Alex. However, upon hearing that Candice was going to Stugan City, he couldn’t help but ask, “Did Alex ask you to go?”
Candice replied, “I just need to handle some issues over there. I should be back soon.”
Joe sighed but didn’t say anything more. He just told Candice to take care of herself,
She ran into Jackson in Silverstone Hospital’s parking lot as she left the sanatorium, who had just come from visiting his mother.
Jackson hadn’t expected to run into Candice. He smiled and asked, “Why are you here?”
“I was visiting my grandfather.”
Candice and Jackson were considered friends, so she didn’t hide the fact that she was going to Stugan City from him.
After hearing it, Jackson furrowed his brow. He immediately thought it was Alex’s arrangement.
However, Candice didn’t think much of it. “It’s just work. Going to Stugan City might be more relaxing.”
At least she wouldn’t have to see Alex flaunting his relationship with Sonia in front of her all the time.
However, Candice was mistaken.
She had just arrived at Stugan City and met with The next morning; she had just met with Charles Welch, the manager of the Stugan City branch, when she received a call.
It was a call informing her that Aether Corporation headquarters were sending additional personnel, and that Candice and Charles were required to pick them up in the afternoon.
Charles asked Candice, “Who is the headquarters sending?”
Candice had no idea. It wasn’t until that evening, when she and Charles went to the airport together, that she saw Alex and Sonia walking out.
Her expression darkened.
Alex had personally come over to Stugan City.
Charles felt intimidated and immediately went forward to flatter him.
Candice didn’t say much along the way. She sat in the front passenger seat and looked out the window while Sonia and Alex sat in the back.
