Chapter 1442
Skylar held Gloria's hand. It was cold, almost devoid of warmth.
"Grandma, please let me stay here. I just want to be with you," she said, playfully acting spoiled.
Whenever Skylar acted like this, Gloria couldn't resist her. Even if it meant taking medicine she didn't like, she would comply.
Gloria, understanding Skylar's intent, felt her eyes sting. So, she nodded helplessly and said, "Alright, alright. I will let you stay."
Originally, Gloria had hoped to recover some strength before allowing them to return. She didn't want to worry them. But now, it seemed they had found out about her condition.
Her body was failing her. She had thought that after a few days of rest, she'd be back to her old self. But now, even sitting up was a challenge. After living together for over three years, Skylar probably understood her physical condition better than she herself did.
Edgar, witnessing the scene, turned away to wipe his tears. He had been hoping for Joe and Skylar to return as he knew Gloria's time was limited, and she needed her family's presence.
But Gloria didn't want to burden them. She had insisted on waiting and had even prioritized Skylar's health.
Gloria always thought of everyone else but never herself.
It broke Edgar's heart. He could only hope that in her final days, Gloria would be in less pain.
Ten minutes later, Gloria was exhausted and fell asleep again.
Skylar and Edgar quietly left the room.
As soon as the door closed, Skylar asked in a choked voice, "What did the doctor say?"
Edgar sighed and replied, "The
doctor said it's a matter of no more
than a month. I wanted to call you both but Mrs. Martin Senior didn't allow it, afraid you'd worry.
"Despite her condition, she's still thinking about you and Mr. Martin. She even made arrangements for me and Veronica. She thinks of everyone but herself."
Gloria had even bought retirement insurance for him and Veronica, ensuring they'd have no concerns their later years. Their monthly. pensions would far exceed the combined salaries of their children and in-laws.
Having spent so many years with Gloria, they had come to see her as their closest family member.
Hearing this, Skylar couldn't hold back her tears any longer and cried silently.novelbin
She went downstairs after a few minutes.
Her vision was still blurred as she glanced at Joe's messages. He asked about Gloria's condition and whether Skylar was tired from the trip and assured her he was already on his way back.
Taking a deep breath, she replied with trembling fingers. "You need to be prepared. Grandma's condition is not good. The doctor says she has at most a month left."
Joe's reply came quickly. "I'm here for you. Don't be sad. We'll stay by Grandma's side together and make sure she's comfortable." "Okay."
In an apartment somewhere, Kevin held a compass in one hand while several sheets of paper were spread across the table.
He had locked himself in the study all afternoon without eating or drinking. His eyes seemed to flicker with light, but it quickly faded again.
