Chapter 492
The man leaned back against the headboard, lazily pulling off his tie and undoing the top three buttons of his shirt. Taking his time, he finally picked up the phone. Yasmine's voice came through, soft but with a weary edge. "Mr. Everett, did you catch up with your wife?"novelbin
"Yeah."
The mention of Selena brought back the sting of their recent, awkward reunion, tightening his chest.
""Glad to hear it."
Everett wasn't in the mood for chit-chat. "Take care of yourself. If you need anything, let Alex know. She'll sort it out."
A long pause on the other end, like she was holding back tears, then her voice came through, a bit rough, "Mr. Everett, sorry for the trouble."
He gave a short hum and ended the call.
Twiddling his phone, his eyes drifted to the spot beside him-where Selena used to sleep. With a sigh, he dialed Alex.
Alex, forever ready, picked up quickly. "Mr. Everett, what's up?"
He told her to keep tabs on Yasmine, hesitated a moment, then casually asked, "Alex, any idea why Selena's back?"
For three years, not a peep. He figured she'd chosen to stay away for good. So why now?
Alex thought, how should I know why Ms. Selena's back? I'm not a psychic! But, being the savvy assistant she was, she understood the subtext behind his question. He wasn't just making small talk.
Thinking on her feet, Alex replied, "Mr. Everett, funny you ask. I've been wondering the same. I'll dig into it tomorrow."
Everett, pretending to be stern, said, "Alex, who said you could gossip? Stay focused on work!"
Alex, taking one for the team,
nodded. "Don't worry, Mr. Everett. I'll handle it off the clock, won't interfere
With work. Besides, Ms.net'
Selena and I were pretty tight, so checking in on her is only natural.”
A faint, barely-there smile played on Everett's lips. "Good."
Even after hanging up, Alex was still a bit puzzled. What was the boss really getting at?
If he was still hung up on Ms. Selena, tracking her down would've been a breeze these past years, but he hadn'even tried. Yet, if he'd truly moved on, why all the interest now? Was this just an ex-husband's routine concern, or was there something more?
After mulling it over to no avail, Alex decided to focus on how she'd find out about Ms. Selena. Being a worker bee is no easy gig!
Meanwhile, Everett set his phone
aside and closed his eyes. Back in the car it had taken every ounce of self-control not to drag Selena home and claim what he'd been yearning for these past three years.
Seeing her alive, right in front of him, he realized he'd underestimated her hold on him. Selena still had that irresistible pull. She could still ignite every desire within him.
