Chapter 20 Bedtime Stories
"Leave it to me."
Daryl roughly understood what was going on. Zack, being the biggest investor, pulled some strings. And the film company gave the leading role to her right away.
Besides, before she quit, Daryl was the most popular actress. She possessed both the acting skills and beauty perfect for the entertainment industry. This was risky, though. It had been five years since Daryl left the circle. They didn't know if her acting skills were still the same.
Her statement made Sofia curious, so she asked, "Did you agree to be the boy's stepmother?"
"Yes,"
Daryl replied. To keep Sofia from spreading such news, she added, "But you have to keep it a secret for me, or else, Zack will kill me."
She was exaggerating. If Zack was really mad, he might at most ban her from the entertainment industry.
"I know."
Sofia had been in the industry for so long that Daryl's situation did not surprise her.
Most actresses kept their relationships with businessmen as secrets, but Daryl took it up a notch. She got married to one, not just an ordinary tycoon, but to the most powerful man in D City.
After hanging up the phone, Daryl was thinking of how to tell Zack about her upcoming shooting when Benjamin rushed into her arms.
"Wow, Mommy! Will you be shooting your film?"
Benjamin heard his mother talking on the phone. He was delighted with the fact that she could finally do what she wanted.
Holding Benjamin in her arms, Daryl felt warm. She smiled to him and said, "Yes. Are you happy for your mommy?"
It was the first time that Daryl called herself Benjamin's mother. She was a little nervous, but she felt good.
She had been missing her son for so long; Benjamin's presence somehow alleviated the pain.
Benjamin kissed Daryl on the cheek and asked, "Mommy, can I go with you when you start filming?"
'Also to protect you!' he thought to himself. Although Benjamin was a kid, he was aware that women were the usual victims of bullying in the entertainment industry. He was determined to guard her. Daryl was glad with his enthusiasm. She ruffled his hair. "Of course you can. As long as you don't feel bored there."
"I won't, Mommy," he proudly said.
Benjamin reached for Daryl's hands to cup his face. For him, there could be no dull moment when his mother was around.novelbin
The butler cleaned a guest room for Daryl.
It was on the second floor opposite to Zack's room. Benjamin's room was beside Zack's.
Benjamin noticed this and he came up to the butler and asked, "Uncle, why are you cleaning this room?" "This will be Mrs. Ji's room,1
the butler politely admitted.
Benjamin touched his chin with his delicate fingers as he thought for a while. Then he snorted, "Daddy is so mean. I can't believe he'd drive Mommy away like this."
After the butler left, Benjamin called Dillon over.
"Dillon, go and get Mommy's sheets wet with water!"
"What?"
Dillon asked in confusion. "But why?"
"Daddy kicked Mommy out of their room,"
Benjamin replied and raised his head high. "It's a pity that he forgot that he has a son who is very capable and smart. I won't let Mommy be wronged by him." "Well..."
Dillon felt helpless. "Have you ever considered that maybe they are still not used to sleeping together? Maybe after they get along well with each other, they will stay in the same room." Benjamin frowned upon such idea. As he pondered, he realized that Dillon had a point.
"In that case, I will be giving Daddy some time."
Upon hearing that, Dillon finally heaved a sigh of relief.
Later that night, Benjamin quickly took a shower and put on his pajamas. The boy giddily ran to Daryl in excitement.
"Mommy, will you tell me a bedtime story?" he requested in a gentle tone. Benjamin had heard stories before, but they were all told by the butler or his father. Zack read him stories without any emotion.
It did not keep Benjamin interested at all. To have his mother take such role would be incomparable.
"Sure!"
Daryl's heart felt warm. She then accompanied him back to his room. She was mulling over on what story she should tell him for his wits intimidated her.
"Any story told by you is more than enough for me, Mommy. Don't worry!"
Benjamin took out a book from the nightstand and handed it to Daryl. "These are all the stories that the butler had told me before I was three. I can recite them, but I still want to have you read them for me, Mommy."
Daryl took the book. She flipped a few pages and asked out of the blue, "Did your daddy tell you stories before?"
"He did."
Benjamin sighed. "But he was not good at it. His voice was always cold and flat."
It was true. Zack was known for his cold nature. He was a man of few words. Every time he opened his mouth, his words would probably be offensive and would always sound indifferent. Zack was someone people shouldn't mess with. He was someone to be respected out of fear.
Daryl caressed the boy's head. "Mommy will tell you stories from now on. We wouldn't even miss a day."
"Thank you, Mommy."
Benjamin could feel his heart beat out of his body. He jumped on his bed and kissed her to show his gratitude.
Daryl gave her all despite the fact that she never did such a thing before. She told the story in a very animated manner that her voice even changed to match the characters.
It sounded a bit funny. They didn't mind as they were enjoying their bond.
Just as the butler was about to reach Benjamin's room to bring him his milk, he couldn't believe his eyes. Zack was standing just outside the door. He looked tender.
The butler had to take a second look. It was rare for Zack to show emotions.
It was not until Zack saw the butler on his side that he came back to his senses.
"Sir," the butler greeted him at once.
"There is no need to give Bennie the milk,"
Zack said in a hushed voice. "Put it in Daryl's room."
"Yes, sir."
The butler was curious. He didn't know why, but for him, Zack was slowly changing. He thought it was good.
He followed Zack's instructions and was done with the deed.
A few moments later, Daryl went back to her room. She noticed the glass of milk on the table. Other than that, there were also neatly folded clothes in her room.
