Shemaine snapped, “Watch yourself, Samuel! How dare you tell me all this while Natasha is still inside? Have you no shame?”
Samuel was about to argue when his phone rang. He kept his grip on Shelmaine as he picked up the call and greeted the person on the other line. Shelmaine stood close enough to him to hear Natasha’s voice on the other line. “Sammy, where are you? You’ve been gone for a while.”
“I went to the restroom,” Samuel Eed.
“I thought something had happened to you. I’ll head over there,” Natasha said.
“No need. I’ll be going back to the hall soon. Stay where you are or you’ll get lost,” Samuel said, cajoling Natasha even as he held Shelmaine in place.
He was a seasoned player, through and through. The thought crossed Shelmaine’s mind as she shot him a withering look, marveling at his audacity. Natasha whined, “But I’m worried about you.”
“What are you worried about? Did you think I’d come out and plow my ex–wife or something?”
“That wasn’t what I meant just- Natasha argued.
Samuel cut her off impatiently, “Whatever. I’ll be back in a bit.”
“Hurry back,” Natasha said. “I miss you already.”
As he hung up, Shelmaine mocked, “I truly admire your ability to multitask, Samuel Your acting skills are award–worthy. She didn’t even suspect you. Should I ask for pointers? If I wanted to know how to lie and cover my tracks, I’d want to learn from the best”
Her venomous sarcasm was hard to miss.
Samuel retorted, “Well, don’t let me keep you from learning”
“You must be out of your mind. I don’t owe you anything,” she hissed, her breath quickening.
She willed herself to stay calm, but she was getting more riled up by the second. “I could never be despicable the you, and I wouldn’t stoop so low, either. You’re psychotk. Leave me the hell alone, Samuel!”
Samuel pointed out, “You’re seriously considering marrying into the Gallaghers? Are you that eager to cut ties with me? Jullen’s parents would never allow you to attend the party if they’d known about our history.”
“Oh, thanks for your concern, but none of this is your business. Let me go, Samuel. Don’t make me say it again,” Shelmaine spat. She had lost her patience entirely, and her wrist was bleating in pain from his vise–like grip. If he held on any tighter, he might snap her bone.
She was growing rate when she heard footsteps approaching them. She wasn’t sure if it was Julien coming to find her, but the footsteps were familiar. Her heart sank. She might beright

She wasn’t sure if she was still breathing. She gave Samuel another grave warning despite knowing he would not listen, “Let me go right now. If not, I can tell Natasha what you did to me. She’s sick, isn’t she? We both know what the shock will do to her.”
The next second, Samuel released her. She bolted for the light immediately, leaving Samuel behind in the shadowy comer. His face was grim as he listened to Shelmaine speaking to Julien, her voice soft and sweet.
“What are you doing here?” she asked.
“I looked for you everywhere,” Julen explained. “The waiter told me he saw you making your way here. I thought you left.”
“No, I just came out to get some air.”
