Libby watched him retreat, looking as though she wanted to say something but stopped herself.

Claudette approached her, gently wiping away her tears “Libby, don’t mind my brother. He’s just an oblivious brute. My aunt once told me that, in his world, there are only two kinds of people–Mackenzie and everyone else.”

Libby quickly took the tissue from her, forcing a smile. “Claudette, I’m not crying. It’s fine. Your brother does have good taste. Mackenzie is a hundred times more beautiful than me. But doesn’t she dislike him?”

“Of course she does!” Claudette replied matter–of–factly “Mackenzie has good judgment–there’s no way she’d like someone as clueless as him.”

“Well…” Libby hesitated, fiddling with her fingers. “I actually think he’s pretty great. He’s loyal and doesn’t show interest in other women. Isn’t that dependable?”

Claudette was momentarily speechless but then gave it some thought. She had to admit that Libby wasn’t entirely wrong. Still, she asked in surprise, “Libby, don’t tell me you actually like my brother? He’s so clueless, and he’s hurt you several times!”

“But he saved my life!” Libby blurted out quickly. “If it weren’t for him, I’d have been defiled by those bandits and sacrificed to the Serpent King. My fate would’ve been unimaginable!”

“Why are you always defending him?” Claudette stared directly at her. “Do you really like him? He’s a handful!”

“Erm…” Libby’s face turned crimson as she bit her lip. “Do you think he knows you’re always badmouthing him behind his back?”

“Uh…” Claudette’s face reddened as well, realizing she had lost the argument. “I’m not badmouthing him,” she quickly defended. “I’m just telling the truth!”

“Hmph! Either way, you can’t badmouth him anymore. If you do, I’ll tell him you’re always sabotaging him!” Libby smirked, turning the tables.

“This is simple. If you trust my men, I’ll have them take over the watch tonight,” Mackenzie offered enthusiastically.

No man could resist the invitation of such a beautiful woman. Besides, Mackenzie had recently risen to fame across the West End. Sharing dinner with such a legendary beauty was a delightful prospect.

“Alright, Ms. Quillen. With such a kind offer, it would be rude to refuse. Please have your men take over the watch. If they notice anything unusual, let us know immediately,” the guards‘ squad leader agreed.

“Of course!” Mackenzie readily agreed and promptly assigned a Wolf Warrior Unit to guard the town gate.

The long winter night settled in. Not long after dusk, dozens of shadowy figures appeared on the road leading into the town. They hid in concealed spots, observing the situation at the gate.

The leader, a man with purplish–blue skin and strange tattoos, emanated an ominous aura.

“Mauve Protector, based on our reconnaissance, Mackenzie and her group have entered this town,” reported a dark–faced subordinate.

“Of course! When I heard the stone forest base was burned down, I immediately suspected they’d come here,” Mauve Protector said with certainty, his eyes gleaming with malice. “Mackenzie insists on opposing us. We spared her once, but she mistook our leniency for fear. Now, she refuses to leave the West End, determined to wipe us out. She even killed my friend, Azure Protector. Tonight, I’ll avenge him!”

The dark–faced subordinate, realizing further persuasion was futile, relented. Both knew that by the time reinforcements from the Serpent King arrived, it would be too late.

“Let them witness the power of my Seven Step Violet Venom!” Mauve Protector extended his snake–like tongue, licked it with satisfaction, and swallowed a strange pill. He exhaled a cloud of purple smoke toward the guards at the gate.

The darkness and the cold wind concealed the danger, making it nearly impossible to detect without prior warning. As expected, the guards began to collapse one after another moments later.

“Amazing, Mauve Protector! Your Seven Step Violet Venom truly lives up to its name. Among the Serpent King’s followers, you must be second to none!” flattered the dark–faced subordinate and the others in hushed tones.

“Heh, child’s play! Move quickly. We need to find Mackenzie and kill her before anyone notices!” Mauve Protector waved his hand, and the men silently infiltrated the town.
