CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

Serena stayed as far away from Jakes as the house could allow without it being extremely awkward and once in a while when she looked up, she caught him staring at her with some look in his eyes. He was beginning to creep her out and she could only blame it on Damon.. for God sake, she had loved the boy before Damon and the marriage and now she could not even bear to look at him after his suggestion that they went out behind the backs of her husband and her sister, his girlfriend.

“Are you okay, Serena?” Her mother called, probably after observing how deep in thought she was.

“I am fine mother, I was thinking of the whole situation, you know. How are you feeling? Were you able to get a little sleep last night?”

“I tried but sleep wouldn’t come to me, with my husband being out there and at the mercy of kidnappers, I could hardly sleep a wink.”

Serena’s left eye began twitching, it always happened when she had something to say but was trying so hard not to say anything. She did not want to tell her mother about her conversation with Damon and how he had stolen drugs from them and she most definitely did not want her mother to know about Damon’s plan to kill him.

“What is the matter?” Her mother asked observing her keenly.

Damn! Nothing got past the woman

“Nothing, I have something in my eyes, that’s all.” She said scratching her twitching eye.

“I know that twitch anywhere, Serena. If there is something about this whole case that you are not telling me, I swear I am not going to be happy with you. Anything it is at all, I need to know.”

Serena glanced frantically to where Jakes sat, he had something in his ears and was humming to a song he was no doubt listening to so there was no way he was going to hear what she was about to tell her mother.

“I overheard Damon discussing with his bodyguard, they know where father is and they have confirmed that he is merely hiding to escape their wrath.” Serena whispered

“What wrath? Whatever did my husband do to offend the mafia?”

“Mother, I know this is going to sound extremely crazy but they say he stole drugs from them. Millions of dollars worth of drugs and I have no idea what they are going to do when they find him.”

Her mother did not look surprised, instead it looked like she had been expecting that piece of information for years

“You don’t look surprised” Serena commented, eyeing her mother.

“I am surprised, now if you would excuse me” her mother said firmly and walked away.

Serena knew she was up to something, crying about your husband and the minute you are told his crime and whereabouts, you suddenly do not care. Her mother was up to something and she was going to find out and so she stood up and followed her, stopping when she heard her mother on a call.

“You need to leave where you are now… they know… I don’t want to get involved anymore, I am covering your ass enough as it is. No, the police have no idea… I am a good actress, you know”…. then small laughter followed by a softer tone

Serena’s mouth hung open even as her mother turned and let out a Yelp.

“You scared me, what are you doing back here?”

“Who was on the phone with you just now? And I hope to God you do not tell me that that was father.”

Her mother’s guilty stare was enough answer, Serena groaned and placed a hand on her forehead, she could a headache coming on.

“You knew where he was all this time and you let us console you? You know he stole drugs from my husband and you let him, warning him to run? Mother!”

“Oh please Serena, enough with your self righteous indignation. How dare you try to educate me on anything at all? You are not the one who is here while her daughter is married to the richest man in the country and yet sends us such meagre amount of money.”

“Meagre? Mother, that money is enough to feed a generation of people for a full month without them ever stepping outside and we send it to you both every week, without ever requesting. Are you here trying to justify the fact that your husband stole from my husband. If Damon finds out that you are also in on this…”

“Like he isn’t aware… hold up, he did not tell you about our discussion before he left the house and asked you not to return yet”

“What discussion?” Serena asked

“He knows that I am involved in your father’s escape, he knows all about it and for the fact that he did not inform you…”

Serena stared at her mother like she had just sprouted a second head and it was that of a gorgon. She needed to get back to Damon immediately, he had some questions to answer for himself.

“What is going on here?” Eloise said rubbing her eyes.

It was quite obvious that their small spat had woken her up.

“You should ask mother, she is the one keeping from us the fact that father now sells stolen drugs and she knows where he is hiding.”

“Oh that? I know all about it, so?”

“So? Seriously Eloise, you do know that the mafia keep none of their enemies alive. How could Father endanger our lives like that.”

“Relax sis, that’s why we had to make sure we were stealing from your husband. No way is he going to kill his wife’s family.

Serena looked from mother to sister in shock, they indeed were cut out of the same cloth.

“I am leaving” Serena announced on her way out the door.

“Wow, okay. See you, Serena and please think on what I propositioned you.” This was jakes talking.

Serena nodded absentmindedly and proceeded to the car where Santos sat waiting.

“Do you have an idea where your boss is? She asked him as soon as she entered

“Yes ma’am”

“Take me there and I am in no mood for arguments.” She warned when she saw his lips forming a protest.

They backed out of the driveway with only one thing of Serena’s mind.

She was going to murder him.
