Chapter 764: The Past of Elsa and Luke Gill
Tina put the bamboo slip back into the file bag and pulled out the documents inside. "Elsa, you once said that Luke Gill was the one who ruined your family. Was it because he tampered with your family's products?" she asked abruptly, staring at the papers.
Elsa froze for a moment, and a painful expression clouded her face as she recalled the past. "Yes. Even though the Dyer family was a hidden family, our focus had always been on herbal medicine. Later, we ventured into modern medical products. Back in the day, some of the most famous drugs on the market came from the Dyer family."
At that time, the Dyer family was the cornerstone of the national medical industry. As the sole heir to the Dyer family, Elsa lacked talent in medicine but excelled in business management.
When she became an adult, her father entrusted her with part of the family business. She lived up his expectations, and during that period, the Dyer family held a prestigious position among the country's elite in the business world. But Elsa carried a deep regret. She had no medical talent, and she had overheard her parents sighing about the family's legacy not being preserved. Guilt weighed on her, and she became determined to make up for it. That determination led her to search for medical talent-until she met Luke Gill.
"At the time, I was out negotiating a business deal. When I stepped out of the hotel, I saw Luke Gill being beaten by a group of people. They accused him of stealing their spotlight in front of a mentor and said someone from a poor, rural place like him didn't deserve to study medicine."
Even now, Elsa found the scene ridiculous. "I was young and impulsive then. I couldn't stand seeing someone being bullied, so I stepped in to help him. But I didn't realize it was all a trap he had set with the hidden families."
At first, Elsa didn't think much of Luke Gill. He was just a small, insignificant figure in her eyes. But soon, her life seemed to be filled with his presence. Step by step, Luke Gill lured her into discovering his medical talent and falling in love with him.
Eventually, he joined the Dyer family's new drug development team.
In the beginning, everything went smoothly. The drugs Luke Gill developed performed exceptionally well in clinical trials. But just as they talked about marriage, everything changed.
"My parents never trusted Luke Gill," Elsa said, her voice hoarse as she covered her face with her hands, sobbing. "I was too stubborn, blinded by love. I thought he was my true love, so I gave him such an important position. And that led to everything that happened later. It's all my fault!"
The image of her parents jumping to their deaths still haunted her, a nightmare she could never escape. Guilt and remorse consumed her. She spent countless sleepless nights until she met Austin, who finally pulled her out of that dark, aimless
state.
Tina watched Elsa, who was overwhelmed with self-blame and pain, and sighed deeply. Why did she keep running into women who let love cloud their judgment? Uncle's aunt had been like this, and Elsa had started the same way. She patted Elsa's shoulder. "This wasn't your fault. Even if it hadn't been Luke Gill, the hidden families would've found another way to destroy your family."
The Solomon family had fallen victim to the same fate. The Dyer family, too. The greed and reckless behavior of the hidden families had caused tragedies for Elsa and her mentor. Over the years, countless families who refused to bow to their control had vanished under fabricated charges.
The more Tina thought about it, the more she felt the government's actions were justified. "Hayden, send Dexter a message. Ask him to draft two lawsuits and file them with the court."
"Understood, Serena," Hayden replied. He was about to make the call when he paused and asked, "Serena, who are we suing?"
"Luke Gill and the local education bureau," Tina replied.
"What?!" Hayden's jaw dropped. Did he hear that right? Suing Luke Gill was one thing, but the education bureau?
Nathan chimed in cautiously. "Ma'am, did I hear you correctly? Who are you suing?"
Elsa, who had been crying just moments ago, was now shocked into silence. Her tears dried up instantly. She hesitated, wanting to check Tina's temperature but too afraid to do so. "Tina, suing Luke Gill is one thing, but the education bureau... isn't that a bit much? My in-laws back then..."
Back then, the lower-level officials hadn't conducted a thorough investigation. But fundamentally, it had been the Bailey family's schemes. What could suing the education bureau accomplish?
Jared remained silent. In the entire room, apart from the unconscious Dyer family elders, he was the calmest. It was as if Tina's bold declaration was no more surprising than a comment about the weather. He listened quietly, the corner of his mouth curling into a faint, indulgent smile.
"Tina, are you trying to make a scene?" he asked.
Tina gave him a look that said, "Uncle, you get me." She replied, "The hidden families don't want to be exposed, do they? Let's give the Bailey family some attention."
"And while we're at it, we'll remind the government just how much the Langdon family's lackeys have infiltrated key institutions in Ashbury. Over the years, who knows how much influence the hidden families have exerted at the local level?" "But... but..." Hayden stammered. "Serena, even so, couldn't we just file a report? Isn't this a bit... extreme?"
Nathan twirled his index finger, suddenly understanding Tina's plan. He smacked Hayden on the head. "Who said we're actually suing the bureau? The people who handled Mrs. Dyer's in-laws' case back then have probably climbed the ranks by now. We'll pick one of them. Sure, we can't sue the bureau, but as private citizens, we can accuse them of accepting bribes."
"Smart," Tina said, giving him an approving look. She then shot Hayden a glare, as if disappointed by his lack of progress. How had he spent so much time with her and Jared without getting any smarter?Exclusive © content by N(ô)ve/l/Drama.Org.
Feeling like Serena had just scolded him with her eyes, Hayden sheepishly rubbed his nose. "You could've said so earlier! You scared me. And Serena, you scared Mrs. Dyer too."
Elsa blushed slightly, embarrassed. "Back then, I didn't know much about the people handling my in-laws' case. But I do know one of them. He's now a department director. Tina, you've met him-it's that man who came with Mrs. Ogden last night, Phil Walker."
"Then we'll sue him," Tina said decisively.
