Chapter 38
I got up from the bed and scratched my head. I’m sweaty and breathless as I’m having those episodes of nightmare again.
My nightmare now was strange compared to the previous nights. I haven’t woken up in the middle of the night for a few days. I usually wake up in the morning, and all I remember is the dream.
I thought about my dream. The same girl in every dream is calling my name. She’s asking for my help while a big man is dragging her out of the dented car. I tried to reach for her to help, but I couldn’t move my whole body, which was stuck to the steering wheel. I was numb from the pain caused by our collision with a concrete barrier.
I feel like I was so worthless during those times. I could do nothing but listen to the woman’s faint cry. And then silence. I fought the urge to fall into sleep, but the numbness in my head is throbbing. I closed my eyes and welcomed the deafening silence. And then I woke up, gasping for air.
“You’re having a nightmare again.”
I jumped when a hand reached out to touch my bare back. I turned to Femella, who had a worried expression on her face. My gaze went to the book she was holding.
How long has it been since she’s awake and watching over me? Does she do it every night? Is this the reason why she always wakes up late because of me?
“Why are you still up? It’s late, “I said instead, and wiped away the sweat.
I could see the pain that went through his eyes. She feels rejected. It would have been a good time now for us to talk about what she said in the past that she knew, but I refused again.
Her face went blank.
“I’m just finishing reading something. The book is so good I can’t put it down. ”
I looked at the digital clock. It’s one o’clock.
“You can continue that tomorrow. Go to sleep. ”
“Okay, but not before I get you water.”
“No,” I said, stopping her. “It’s fine. I’ll do it. I’ll go out too. I have something to finish for work. ”
She froze. Pain flashed in her eyes, but she quickly concealed it by smiling.
“Sure.”
I got out of bed and put on the t-shirt. I went to the bathroom to wash my face. When I came out of the door, I found Femella sitting on the bed, looking like she was waiting for me.
She stared at me.
“You’re still doubting me.”
I froze in my tracks. Her words were like knives that pierced through me. I have no answer because it is correct. I still doubt it. I didn’t want to hear what she had to say about my past first because I knew I would believe her. I want to first remember what happened before I listened to her.
Femella smiled.
“It’s okay, Mav. That’s only natural. I have a history of lying and cheating people. It’s good that you’re cautious. But I assure you that everything I know about you in the past is true. Don’t worry that I will force you to listen to me. I will just wait for the time when you come to me and ask me about it. ”
I stared at Femella. I can read the understanding in her eyes. I approached her and kissed her head.
“Rest. I’ll join you later. ”
I went out of the room and got some wine. I went straight to the home office to finish reading a business proposal. The capsule hotel is already in its interim phase. I just have to review some papers.
I opened the laptop and started working. My dream still lingers in my memory. It’s disturbing me, so I made a decision. It’s high time I went to see my neurologist again.
I went to my unread emails to find another hotel design proposal. I scrolled through a bunch of messages when something caught my attention. I still have the report sent to me by Butch. I’m contemplating whether to read it or not, but I still find myself clicking on it.
I just wanted to stop in the first part of the report. It recounts Femella’s life after the death of her parents. She worked at a fast food chain as a part-timer while studying in college. She lived in a slum with no family and no money. She has no one to protect her.
I hovered over the old pictures of Femella. She was obviously suffering from them. She was so skinny and had a lifeless face while mopping inside a fast food chain. I stopped reading and turned off the laptop. I can no longer afford to continue reading. My heart is aching with pity for her.
I finished the wine and left the home office. I stood in front of the window and looked out at the bright buildings outside.
The dream came back to my mind. I sigh. Maybe it’s time for me to talk to Femella about this. I have to give her a chance.
I left the window and lay down on the sofa. I closed my eyes and started remembering the face of the girl in my dreams. But I don’t really remember anything. I sighed again. I need to see my doctor at the soonest possible time.
The cell phone rang in my pocket.
Hello, Jex, “I replied.”
“Sir, your suspicion is correct. Mr. Lagma Rey is a member of El Draconem.”Ccontent © exclusive by Nô/vel(D)ra/ma.Org.
I sat up straight at what it said.
“What else?”
“Levin Monaco is his real name. He was recruited by your father ten years ago to be his second in arms in the organization. He is also the current leader of one of the factions fighting to get the chairmanship of El Draconem. ”
I stood up again to get some wine.
“Did you check on his base? Did you see anything suspicious? Perhaps he’s hiding something? ”
“We’re concentrating on his real estate business as of now, sir.”
I drank the wine straight from the bottle before returning it to the wine storage.
“Okay. Keep me posted, Jex. Thank you. ”
I went back to lying on the sofa after putting the cellphone on the table. I put my arm around my forehead and blinked. I didn’t realize that I had fallen asleep.
I woke up later. I moved to go back to the room, but I was shocked to notice Femella sleeping on top of me. Her face is resting on my chest while her hands are inside my shirt. Her lower body is enclosed in my legs. There was also a blanket that fell on the floor.
I watched Femella sleeping. Her mouth was open and her long hair was all over the place. I combed away her hair and kept staring at her.
“I don’t know how you did it, but I’m glad that you kept strong. You did overcome the trials. If you had given up, then I wouldn’t have met my match. You made me more alive, Fem. I promise to keep you happy, always. ”
I caressed her face. She moaned and squeezed herself even harder on me. I reached for the blanket on the floor and wrapped it around the two of us. I tightened my hands on her back and kissed her head.
“What did you do to me? I don’t know how to explain what I’m feeling right now. I don’t believe in love given how little time we have spent together, but what else can be the explanation here? ”
I kissed her head and whispered. “I love you, Ms. Alcantara.”
I closed my eyes and smiled at the fact that I had finally admitted it to myself. I just shook myself.
“I can’t believe I’m confessing to a sleeping woman.”
