Falling for my Ex-Fiancee’s Best friend

Living in fear

With her eyes wide and what felt like her heart in her throat, Demelza had tears rolling down her eyes.

In frustration, she flung her legs in the air and shut her eyes tight as she thought about the next step to take.

She immediately remembered that it was Katherine who told her about the lawyer, so she picked up her phone to call her.

“Hey D,” Katherine said immediately she picked up Demelza’s call.

“Everything okay?” Katherine asked, noticing Demelza’s silence over the phone.

“Everything’s not okay, Kath, he bailed.” Demelza let out with a cry, accompanying it.

“What do you mean he bailed?” Katherine asked, surprised.

Waiting for Demelza to respond, her phone chimed and she looked at the screen. Her brows furrowed in annoyance wondering why the lawyer would do something like that after giving her his word, coupled with the fact that she had to go out of her way to get him.

“It’s alright, D. I’ll come see you once the day gets bright, okay?” Katherine said and Demelza hung up right after.

Demelza could not go back to bed as she felt so shitty. It wasn’t enough that Nathan had to be a deep shit, the lawyer had to crash her hopes too. She lost all hope because he was her best chance of going against Hampton in court. She got up from bed and made coffee while she sat in the living room feeling so restless.

Finally, she could hear the ding of her doorbell and she rushed to the door. She checked who it was from the peep hole and was delighted to see it was Katherine. She swung the door open and fell into Katherine’s arms. Katherine felt so bad for her as she knew what this meant. It will take them forever to find another lawyer as good.

Both women made their way to the living room sitting down on the couch at the same time. “I gotta tell you something, Demelza.” Katherine said.

“Okay?” Demelza responded with all her attention to Katherine.

“Before coming here, I had to make some enquiries and I found out that the lawyer bailed because he is scared to stand against Nathan in court. And it is worse because Nathan’s representing Hampton. He refused to say much but I think he was threatened and maybe that is why he mailed you that time of the day.”

Demelza’s eyes widened and her voice cracked as she tried to say something but all she could do was stutter.

Katherine immediately wrapped her arms around Demelza, providing love and support to her. Demelza sniffled as she pulled away from the embrace and looked at Katherine. “I do not know, Kath, but why does everything feel so frustrating right now? I am honestly tired.” Demelza expressed with tears still flowing down her cheeks.

“I already promised you, you are not alone in this, okay? I am with you every step of the way.” Katherine assured her.

“I know but I feel lost right now, I do not think I can handle any more of this,” Demelza said, leaning unto Katherine.

Both women talk a while and Katherine left after she was able to put Demelza to sleep.

Demelza jolted from a very loud sound on her door, she rubbed her eyes and walked to the door but she did not find anyone there except an envelope dropped in front of the door. She picked it up and walked back inside to open up the envelope to see what information was there.

In her oversized hoodie, she fell to the ground as she read about her due mortgage and the bank threatening to come take the house. Reality sets itself in her front as she realized her father wasn’t her only problem. Now she was at risk of being homeless too.

“Wow,” she said, laughing at herself because her problems kept multiplying. A laughter that soon turned into cry. After crying her eyes out, she decided to call the mortgage company home they could give her extra time to pay up.

“This is Demelza Thorpes on the line, good morning,” Demelza greeted.

“How may we be of help to you, Miss Thorpes?” the respondent over the phone asked.

Demelza stated her plea but the responded explained other available options and the best out of it was to pay off the debt or the house will be taken away.

Demelza ended the call, resorting to use the money in the bank to pay up and clear the debt on ground.© 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.

She had a quick shower and dressed up as fast as she could and made her way to the bank.

Upon getting to the bank, she withdrew all the money and made her way to the mortgage company. When she got there, she met with the person in charge of her account and paid in cash to settle all her debts. She felt bad yet, relieved that the only thing she had to worry about was saving up more money for her father’s release and also providing for her basic needs.

As she walked on the road yet to take a taxi home, she thought about how fast she has to look for another job as she needed to work as much as she could.

Luckily for her, it was a bustling city so finding a second job wouldn’t be that hard. Feeling a bit dizzy from stress, Demelza immediately called a taxi home.

Upon reaching home, she sat down on the dinning thinking a lot and going through some newspapers and magazines she bought on her way back to check for jobs.

Seated on the table with a cup of coffee, the table was clustered with a lot of papers, her notepad and pen, and her PC too. Using all at once to find a job was most appropriate at the moment.

While going through everything, her eyes widened when she saw that Nathan’s office was hiring for file clerks. Being an orderly person, she knew she could do it. The problem now is if Nathan was going to agree to employ her since it’s his company.

“Problem for later” she told herself as she applied for the job. Now was not the time to miss out on a well-paying and decent job just because of her stupidity.
