Chapter 2600
Even if she had genuinely forgotten him, she seemed to care.
But wouldn’t she feel uneasy being so close to a man she considered a stranger in such circumstances?
Without dwelling further, Nathan quickly stood and followed Lucinda’s path.
Sonny was handling the person who had fired the shot, so Nathan focused on protecting his wife.
He couldn’t risk losing her again.
They both returned to the house.
There, Hilda was pacing in the courtyard, clearly fraught with worry.
As soon as Lucinda approached, Hilda quickly walked over and took her hand, “What’s happening? I heard a gunshot.
Are you hurt?”
Lucinda shook her head.
“Don’t worry, we’re all right.
Hilda, how about you? Have you noticed anything unusual?”
“I’ve been in the backyard with the chickens; what could possibly happen to me? There aren’t many people left in the nearby mountains; most have moved to the city, so it’s unlikely for strangers to pass through here.”
Lucinda looked around, her face expressionless.
“Alright.”
Nathan watched them for a moment; he then walked over and suggested that Lucinda and Hilda go inside the house.
After they entered, he shut the door behind them.
Suddenly, the room was plunged into darkness.
Startled, Hilda quickly switched on the light, ran to the door, and started banging on it, calling out to Nathan who was just outside.
“Mr.
Payne, what are you doing?”
Nathan’s voice was grave.
“There was a gunshot in the mountains, and the shooter’s weapon is serious.novelbin
Neither of you is well-prepared to defend yourselves.
It’s safer to stay inside.
I’ll unlock the door once I’ve handled the situation.”

He secured the door bolt, firmly locking them in, and added with a hint of worry, “Hilda, please look after Lucinda for me.”
“What? Mr.
Payne? Mr.
Payne!”
No response came from outside, leaving Hilda nearly frantic.
“How can you just lock us in here?”
Despite Hilda’s panic, Lucinda remained composed.
“It’s too risky out there.
If someone is still hiding in the mountains and shooting, you could be in danger, Hilda.”
“Well, okay.”
Lucinda glanced up to read Hilda’s expression and added, “I’ve heard that all three of them were once in the army.
They are highly skilled in fighting.
I’m sure they will keep us safe.
We just need to stay calm and wait here for a while.”
Lucinda had faith in Nathan’s and Sonny’s extensive experience from their time in the National Security Bureau and trusted that they would resolve the situation swiftly, alleviating her need for concern.
Rather than dwelling on the gunshot, she preferred to use the time to engage in a meaningful conversation with Hilda.
