Chapter 2588
Lucinda seemed unaffected by the sight of him smoking.
She didn’t even glance his way.
Had she still held any memory of him, she would never have permitted him to smoke.
Colby, with his frail heart and respiratory issues, was the main reason smoking was prohibited in their household—a rule stringently enforced by Lucinda herself.
Yet, in the past few days, Nathan had been smoking frequently, even in Lucinda’s presence now.
The sound of Lucinda’s scoffing laugh seemed to mock him.
Had she truly lost her memory?
If so, what were all those subtle gestures she displayed earlier supposed to mean? Kyson might have been unable to see them, but Nathan was certain of their presence.
Nathan’s mind was a whirlwind of chaos.
Slowly, he finished an entire cigarette.
He extinguished the cigarette butt, and then promptly withdrew another from the pack and ignited it.novelbin

He resumed his smoking, the sound of the lighter sharply punctuating the stillness of the night.
Unyielding, Nathan didn’t relent.
He felt a reckless urge to smoke every cigarette in Sonny’s pack, gambling on the hope that Lucinda might remember him.
However, as he neared the end of the second cigarette, he lost his nerve.
Even if Lucinda didn’t recall him now, she might regain her memories eventually.
Then she would recall him smoking an entire pack in one evening and likely punish him severely.
The thought of the hefty wooden ruler she might use was enough to deter him.
Reluctantly, Nathan pocketed the pack and snuffed out the second cigarette.
With a sullen expression, he returned inside.
He shut the wooden door and made his way to his makeshift bed in the living room.
Sonny was already deeply asleep, sprawled across nearly the entire bed, his snoring filling the room.
Nathan’s face darkened further as he lightly kicked Sonny’s leg.
Sonny remained undisturbed.
Fury sparked within Nathan.
How could he sleep so peacefully? Clearly, he had forgotten the rule that agents of the National Security Bureau must maintain a Light sleep during missions.
Nathan felt the urge to give Sonny a beating, but with the others asleep, he refrained.
Instead, he quietly crouched down and pinched a tender spot on Sonny’s arm.
“Ouch!”
