Chapter Twenty-three
Present day….
“Who are you standing up for? Me or she?” she blurted out without thinking.
Kai was staring at her unmoving.
What was he going to say now? That he was supporting his mistress and not his mate who he hated… no, disliked.
He glanced at her pretty face which was going red with anger. Was he being too considerate now?
Damn. Who was this woman and why was she always making him different from himself?
“I am talking to you, Kai!” she half yelled, flinging her arms in the air.
Kai looked upwards and raked his fingers from his tousled hair down to his face and exhaled quietly through his lips.
“Kai, I–” he walked past her like she was invisible, totally ignoring her presence.
“Ah… ah…” she could not think of anything to say. She was dumbfounded.
He was the one who asked her here but he was still the same person ignoring her? Who does that!?
She exhaled before returning to the kitchen.
Standing in front of the kitchen door, Cassy took in a deep breath and put a smile on her face before walking in.
“Your highness,” all the servants curtsied, both hands in front of them, resting on their stomach.
“Rise,” she said with a smile on her face.
They rose and continued with what they were doing.
Livia exhaled and went to meet Cassy, putting on a smile on her face.
“Perhaps, are you are done with preparing breakfast?” Cassy asked, still smiling.
Livia darted her eyes away from Cassy’s frame for a moment and looked at her again with a small smile on her face.
“We are not really done, your highness but–”
“No buts, Livia,” she interrupted and began to head towards the stove.
“No, your highness,” Livia held her by her arm and quickly removed her hand when Cassy stopped.
“Your highness, I am afraid I cannot allow you to stay in this kitchen.”
Cassy’s face scrunched up, her eyebrows furrowing.
“And why is that?”
Livia sighed. “Daryl had taken leave just because she could not face the Alpha. I wonder what I would if I allow you,” she spoke, her eyes looking everywhere but Cassy.
“So, please, your highness try to under–”
Cassy nodded her head repeatedly.
“Fine. I apologize for any inconvenience I may have caused,” she said with a smile on her face and tried to curtsey but Livia quickly stopped her.
“No, your highness. You don’t have to,” she shook her head, holding her as if to lift her up by her shoulder.
Cassy smiled and bid the servants farewell before stepping out of the kitchen.
Her countenance changed as soon as she was out of the kitchen. Before Joanna and Emma could leave the kitchen, she had already stomped out.
As soon as Cassy left, Isabella emerged from a corner where she had been hiding, with a smile on her face.
She had seen the look on Cassy’s face and could not help but feel contented. What did he tell her?
She just could not wait to meet with the love of her life again.
She walked into the kitchen with her arms folded across her chest.
The servants continued working without acknowledging her presence, causing her to become annoyed. Are they so blind that they cannot see her?
She was still standing, carefully planning in her head what she was going to do next when a servant made herself a scapegoat. One that this she-wolf was ready to devour.
“I am so sorry. I am sorry,” the timid servant bowed repeatedly.
A tray with a plate of hot soup had slipped from her hand and a small amount of it had spilled on Isabella’s leg.
The servant was going for another bow when Isabella raised her hand to slap the lass.
The poor lass closed her eyes anticipating the impact of the slap but never got any.
She opened her eyes and found her hand wrist caught in Livia’s grip.
The servants stopped their jobs to watch the drama that was about to happen.
“Let go of my hand,” Isabella’s nose flared as she tried to release her wrist from Livia’s grip.
Livia was not going to let go as she tightened her grip around the woman’s tiny wrist.
“I am warning you. Mind your attitude in this kitchen especially when I’m on duty,” Livia deadpanned. “I am not Daryl or her highness who lets you do whatever you want just because you–” she paused and exhaled before pushing her hand away and leaving.
Isabella quickly scrambled out of the kitchen in shame, causing everyone including Livia, to burst into a fit of laughter.
“Get to work!”
Isabella rushed to Kai’s study where she knew he would be immediately she left the kitchen.
She was furious. Angry. Whatever word that qualified the amount of anger she was feeling.
Kai and Ben kept quiet and turned immediately they sensed her presence.
Ben whipped his head back to Kai who waved his hand dismissively. Ben nodded slightly and bowed before leaving.
“What do I owe this visit?” Kai said amusingly as he stared at her face which was red with anger.
Isabella huffed and folded her arm across her chest.
“I heard you returned yesterday,” she spoke.
Kai nodded and raised his eyebrow questioningly.
“Yes, I did,”
“And you did not even bother to let me know?” she asked angrily.
If she had known she would not have continued to argue with that good for nothing lass.
“I thought–”
She was so angry and the only person she could vent on was him, since he always forbade her from teaching that lowly omega a lesson.
“You thought what?” she cut in. “You even had to come with–”
“I just returned yesterday, Isabella. Can you not allow me to have a good rest just for once!?” he shouted at her and she immediately closed her mouth.
“Did you forget the attitude you just displayed in the kitchen?” he did not give her the chance to speak.
He had done everything he could to keep them away from each other but Isabella seemed adamant.
She took pleasure in tormenting the servants. No matter how much he had lectured her about it, she never seemed to heed to his advice.
“I told you to stay away from the kitchen. Why can’t you just listen to me?”
Isabella lowered her head and fiddled with her fingers. She couldn’t believe she was fighting with him over a lowly omega.
“My love,” she spoke calmly and went around the desk to stand beside him but he did not even spare her a glance.
“I apologize for my rudeness and disobedience. I just could not stand her presence.” she pouted when she tried to touch him but he moved away.
“And that’s the more reason why you should stay away from her,” he replied in a firm tone. “you just go around doing whatever you like. Have you ever thought about the consequences? What would people think?”
“I know, my lord,” she worked her hand up to his shoulder and began to massage.
Silence fell on them as she moved her hand on his body, massaging him seductively and causing sighs to escape from his lips.
“I missed you,” she muttered, her fingers now massaging the relaxing points in his head.
Kai’s body stilled for a millisecond as different questions ran through his head.
Did he miss her too? Was he going to say it back? Why would he miss her?
The last question made him question himself even more.
“Hm,” he found himself saying.
Isabella’s fingers stopped their movement as she bent over, looking into his face.
“Did you not miss me too? Or did she–”
He cleared his throat, interrupting her.
He loved her and he thought about her all through the trip, he definitely missed her. He had to say it back.
He cleared his throat again before speaking, “I missed you. I would appreciate it if you do not mention her.”
Isabella smiled and pecked his lips before going back to massaging his head trying to relax him but Kai was not in any form relaxed.
Mentioning his mate made his wolf leap for joy, causing him to feel uneasy.
But was he only feeling like that because of his wolf?
Kai exhaled and took Isabella’s wrist in his hand and brought her to sit on his lap.
Isabella placed his lips on her lips on his and he kissed her back, bringing her lower lip into his mouth and sucking on it.
She wrapped her hand around his neck and him closer to her as their tongues danced together.
Kai cupped her breast in his palm and a sigh left her lips.
He found himself withdrawing as the kiss grew hotter. He released her lips and they rested their foreheads against each other’s, panting.
“Your highness–” Ben walked in but he quickly turned around. “I would be outside,” he said and walked out.
Isabella turned his face and pecked his lips but he turned his face again.
“What is it?” her face scrunched up, causing her to wonder what went wrong.
They had been kissing just a few minutes ago, she could not understand the sudden change in his attitude.
Kai exhaled and shook his head slightly.
Personally, he wondered what was wrong with him.
Why was he so distant today? Was it because he had been away for a while?
He placed a faux smile on his face and turned to face her.
“Nothing. I only thought about some official issues,”
Isabella’s face contorted into that of confusion and anger.
“Official issues? While we are in the middle of something?” she scoffed and looked away from him before bringing her eyes back to him. “Seriously?” She tried to stand up but he held her back by her waist.
“Look, Isa I have a lot of issues at hand now,” he uttered calmly, looking into Isabella’s angry eyes. “As you can see, I have to leave for a meeting with the elders. Try to understand me, please. I promise we will go on a trip after I have handled these issues.” he assured her.
A smile appeared on her face.
“Really? Thank you,” she pecked his lips.
“My lady!” Joanna called, running after Cassy who took long and angry strides down the hallway.
She needed to quickly get to her bedchamber. Thankfully, she was almost there.
“My lady! You do not have to be so mad!” Joanna said loudly, still trying to catch up with her.
Cassy stopped in front of the door to her chamber and whipped around to face Joanna.
“I think you may have to take your leave now, Joanna,”
“But, my lady–”
“You can come later,” she interjected.
And with that, Cassy walked into the room and bolted the door.
She was so upset and did not want anyone to disturb her.
Her eyes were blinded by tears as she took off her clothes and changed into a light dress.
Why was he so cruel to her?
She could not understand why everyone, especially him, hated omegas so much.
She did not need him to love her but it would not be bad if he could act nicely to her.
She was weak but she knew she had strengths. Why could everyone not understand that there was strength in every weakness?
“What strength do you have?” her subconscious mocked her, causing tears to pool up in her eyes.
Indeed, she could not fight or act brave at all times but still, she did not need to be ridiculed every single time.
Cassy wiped her cheeks and exhaled.
Why was she crying? Had she not promised herself and to cry because of issues like this?Property of Nô)(velDr(a)ma.Org.
With that thought in mind, she moved towards her bed and drifted up into a dreamless slumber.
“I really pity her,”
“I wonder what the Alpha did to her,”
She could hear voices in her sleep as she slowly became conscious.
“Hmm. I do not understand what Isabella’s problem is. She always derives pleasure in tormenting servants,” the person said. “And like her highness said, she is a servant just like us she should not take things too far just because–”
“Shh. Walls have ears, be careful what you say,” another hushed.
It seemed like the rest of them agreed as they became quiet.
“You must be done with cleaning up by now,” Cassy heard Joanna’s voice.
“Yes,” they replied in unison.
Cassy opened her eyes and sat up, covering herself properly with the quilt.
“Your highness,” all of them curtsied.
The ladies who had been gossiping could not help but wonder if she had heard anything.
“We would leave first,” the older woman spoke for the rest and they quickly bowed before leaving.
Joanna went to Cassy’s side quickly.
“Your highness, how do you feel?” she asked, feeling her temperature. “I apologize for breaking in. I had knocked for a while but you did not respond and I became worried, so–”
Cassy chuckled. “I would have my bath first,”
And after that, she was going to ask the questions that was bugging her.
