KNIGHT
“What repercussions?” I repeated when Nirvana hadn’t given me an answer.
“It’s done. You can’t do anything about it anymore.” She took the clean shirt Kailin gave her while Zarah was cleaning her healing wound. I was a bit surprised she healed faster than any of us, but she still got hurt.
“What you did earlier was reckless. You’re putting everyone in danger because you are too eager to save people’s lives.”
“West could have been dead by now if I was two seconds late.”
“Thank you, Luna,” West said.
“Shut up!” I pointed my finger at West, still focused on my mate. “You may have power, but you can get killed, Nirvana. You were just lying an hour ago, and the first thing you did was jump to the battlefield. That was impulsive and stupid. And what repercussions were you talking about?”
She put the shirt on, too calm to piss me off even more. “You were dying. You were not healing.”
“And?”
“I traded-”
“You what?” My voice raised. The infirmary went silent. Everyone seemed to be holding their breaths.
“Enough!” She slammed her hand on the overbed table, and the thing crashed. “You were dying. What do you expect me to do? Just live? Yes, I kept things from you, but I was going to tell you. I didn’t know how. How do you want me to break it to you that I won’t survive in the battle with Cyrius? That’s how it should happen.”
“Maybe we could find something, Nirvana. That book is like a hundred years old.”
“It was translated from a thousand-year-old slab, Knight.”
“I don’t believe that,” I still denied the fact, or maybe that was not true. “And you shouldn’t have saved me.”
“Now, who’s selfish? I couldn’t let you die. You were in that situation because of me. I know you could never forgive me for what I did, but your skull cracked, Knight, and your spine snapped, and you were not healing. I felt every pain you felt. And I know you wouldn’t hesitate to trade your life for me if I were in your situation. So a thank you would suffice than getting pissed off.” She lay back in bed, wiping the tears with the back of her hand. “Do whatever you want, but it’s done.”
“So you lost your invisible shield?” Dylan asked.
“Yeah,” she said calmly, and it was unsettling how she quickly accepted her defenselessness.
“Then you should be very careful now that you don’t have that kind of protection anymore.” Kailin sat on the bed beside her. “I’m glad you’re awake. I was so worried about you.”
“How long have I been sleeping?”
“Almost two days.” Zarah went to her. “What about the necklace?”
“It won’t work. Anything spell or magic involved. I’m now immune to anything, medically speaking, making me vulnerable.”
“Damn it, Nirvana,” I cursed under my breath.
“We can’t lose you, Knight. Just suck it up. I chose to save you because you deserve to be here right now.” She snorted. “You’re welcome.”
“This is not funny. It’s your life at risk here.”
“You know how it ends. Why not make some good things out of it?”
“Fuck, Nirvana!” I yelled as pain crashed through my chest. “I won’t accept that.”
“Let’s give them some privacy. Come on, guys,” Zarah called everyone out.
Kailin rose from the bed, kissing Nirvana’s cheek. Once everyone was gone, I went to her bed and sat beside her.
“Just let it out. It doesn’t matter if you forgive me or not. What’s done is done.”
I blinked off when the tears fell down my cheeks and pulled her in my arms. “I can’t lose you, Nirvana. It fucking hurts knowing that our time together is limited.”
I felt her sob in my arms. “I’m sorry for being a pain in your ass.”
“I don’t care if you are being a pain in my fucking ass as long as I know we live longer and grow old together. Don’t do this to me, sweetheart, please? You’re killing me.” I kissed the top of her head and hugged her tightly. “Don’t be too calm, accepting your fate. We can figure something out.”
“There’s nothing we can do, Knight. The day is coming-sooner rather than later, you know that.”
“I won’t accept it. I will find a way, and you will not, for the love of-” She cut me off, pressed her finger against my lips, and looked me in the eyes. She was as devastated as I was.
“I’d never thought I would fall madly in love with someone that I only ever wanted was to see that smile on his face. You made me that woman, Knight. Every time I saw you smile, you took my breath away. I will die happy knowing the love of my life loves me back.”
“So you’d rather leave me?”
“If that’s the only way to save you and the people I care about, yes, baby. Please accept this. And don’t make it harder than it already is.” She raised her hand and cupped my face, caressing my cheek.
“No, sweetheart. I just have you. I can’t let you do this, please?” My tears fell on her cheek. It was painful, and I was helpless and terrified that I could not do anything.”
“This is my second life, and I’m glad I spent it with you, and I will spend the rest I have with you. I love you, Knight, till my last breath.”
“Nirvana, please?” I leaned down and pressed my forehead against hers. “Don’t do this to me.”
She pressed her lips against mine, kissing me. Something deep inside me rejoiced, making me gasp. We just fit perfectly, like it was meant to happen at this point in time, yet it already felt like a goodbye.
I wanted to scream out my frustration, but I chose not to. I kissed her back the way my heart told me to, showing her how much it fucking hurt me, how much it crashed my soul, but at the same time, I loved her more than anything in this world, even life itself.
But one thing for sure was that I would not give up on finding something to stop this from happening, even if I had to sacrifice myself for her as long as she would live. Deep inside me, I screamed in pain, in agony, because I didn’t know where to start.
The kiss was passionate at first, filled with so many emotions, but when she dipped her tongue into my mouth, I felt our hunger grow. Every sensation felt right, and it was overwhelming, and my heart almost could not take it.
Breaking the kiss, I looked down at her lips. I peppered her with kisses on her forehead, on her nose, her cheeks, and back to her lips. “I won’t lose you, sweetheart.”
She only smiled. Her eyes said otherwise.
“Forgive me for running away like that. It just, it fucking hurt. We were supposed to be on our honeymoon, but look where we are.”
“Everything happens for a reason, Knight. A lot of our people would have gotten hurt or, worse, killed if we left for our honeymoon.”
“But I promise, we will have our honeymoon.” I kissed her forehead. “And I love you, Nirvana.”
She smiled as she took my hand and kissed it. “I just saved your life. You owe me, husband.”
“Anything for my wife.”
“I want a one-pounder burger, big fries, and a large soda.”
“Is that all?” I smirked.

“Can I ask you something?”
For a moment, I saw the hesitation in her eyes. “Sure.”
“With whom you trade my life to?”
