Branch Sixty Three
The car slowly came to a halt in front of the sandy beach. Xavier turned off the ignition and removed his seat belt slowly.
The wails that had turned to silent sobs had now left the crying girl deep in sleep. Xavier put his head on the steering wheel with his hand as support as he stared at Jessica.
She had been crying non-stop so her face was all swell and her mascara had smudged up. Seeing the ruined make up Xavier is reminded of the first day they met outside the courthouse.
He was too worried about the situation before him to acknowledge her but looking back now he could not deny that even with her ruined face and red face she still looked good.
Jessica stirred a little in her sleep and her eyes flew open. She looked at Xavier for a few minutes before pushing herself away from the seat and sitting upright.
“We are here,” Xavier said clearing his throat and raising his head from the steering wheel.
“Why didn’t you wake me up when we got here?” Jessica asked feeling conscious of herself.
“You were sleeping too soundly, I did not want to wake you up,” Xavier said stretching his hand to the steering.ConTEent bel0ngs to Nôv(e)lD/rama(.)Org .
Jessica cleared her throat. Those words came from his mouth but did not sound like something he would say. Why would he even say that?
“Like an angel” he added.
“What?”
“You were sleeping like an angel,” he said again and opened his door. He stepped out and threw his legs in the air. He had driven for over three hours just to bring her to the beach and make her happy.
“Clean up your face and come out,” he said bending to the car level before closing the door.
What had he just done? He had to play it cool but it was not. How did he just address her as an angel? Was that normal? It was what he thought was a crime to say it. She was his wife and not some stranger after all.
Jessica felt her cheek rush with blood. Did Xavier just unintentionally compliment her and say she looked like an angel?
‘But why would he say such a thing’ she thought to herself as she pulled down the mirror in front of her. She removed a couple of tissues from the box that he had given her. She wet it with a little water from the cup holder in front of her and wiped her face gently.
Her concept for the day was a mellow young woman with a cool skin makeup tone. If she had gone for anything more she would have been looking like a masquerade already.
She wiped her face and blew the snort out of her nose before opening the door and stepping out. Xavier was sitting on the bonnet of the car waiting for her she walked over to him and stood in his front.
“How nice,” she said closing her eyes and breathing in the fresh sea air.
“It’s nice?” Xavier asked feeling a smile climb up his face. He did not know but the feeling of looking at her find peace while she was here was somehow healing to him.
“Yes, Thank you” Jessica replied opening her eyes. Her eyes met with Xavier’s string black ones. He was staring at her blankly and it made her uncomfortable.
She shuffled uncomfortably looking everywhere except at his face.
“Shall we take a walk? I am sure it would help bring your mind off it” Xavier suggested referring to the happenings of earlier.
“I am sorry for earlier. I did not know what came over me. I’m not usually such a mess” Jessica told him.
“Well I disagree,” Xavier said pushing himself off the car. “Shall we?” he asked pointing his hands in the direction towards the sea.
“Why do you disagree and for what?” Jessica asked synchronizing her steps with his.
“It’s a secret,” Xavier said.
“Are you Mr. Xavier Delgado?” Jessica asked standing in front of him and making his steps stop.
“Who are you?” she asked pulling a serious expression on her face.
“What do you mean who am I?” Xavier asked confused.
“The Xavier I know is not sweet, does not compliment, and most importantly does not make jokes,” Jessica said her hands on her waist.
“Oh oh oh and he is never friendly” Jessica felt herself saying.
She had never been afraid of him but since he was showing her a different side she would probe him further and see to it that she gets to the bottom of it.
“What?” Xavier asked shocked.
Her words stung him a little. They were true but hearing someone else other than Burke highlight them made it seem such a big deal.
“Ha ha ha very funny” Xavier mocked as he bypassed her and kept walking ahead.
“Are you coming?” he turned to ask when he saw that she was fixated on one spot and lot moving.
Jessica walked and caught up with him. She had a lot on her mind and she wanted to let it out. She wanted someone to console her and tell her that she made the right decision in all she had done in recent times.
“Want to share your thoughts with me?” Xavier asked breaking the silence between them. Unlike other times when the silence needed a warrior’s sword to break through this time, she had felt comfortable.
“Share my thoughts?” Jessica asked amazed. She never excepted that he would be interested in what she would have to say. “It’s a whole lot and I don’t know if we are close enough to share secrets with each other” Jessica added.
“We agreed to be friends,” Xavier said. “Friends can share secrets and thoughts can’t they?” he added in a question.
“When did we agree to be friends?” Jessica asked shocked.
She could not recall a conversation with such elements. Since she moved into the mansion she barely had many conversations and so she knew a pretty big deal of all she spoke about in that house.
“Oh, so you don’t remember?”
